PhD Studentship: Polyoxoniobates for Catalysis in Green Chemical Processes

Newcastle University

About the Project

Award summary

100% fees covered, and a minimum tax-free annual living allowance of £19,237 (2024/25 UKRI rate). The studentship includes attendance at international conferences and annual placements at Mitsubishi Chemical UK, Wilton.

Overview

This project will develop polyoxometalate (POM) based catalysts to investigate step-changes to the globally-leading Alpha process for methyl methacrylate (MMA) production developed by Mitsubishi Chemical UK at Wilton on Teesside. In addition to resilience against geopolitical factors affecting cost / availability of current catalyst components, POM-based catalysts could provide clean alternative routes to other platform chemicals and intermediates. In addition to synthesis and catalysis studies, the project will involve DFT modelling of reaction mechanisms.
