Job description

Project title: Shock Wave-Particle Interactions for Advanced Engineering ApplicationsSupervisory Team: Dr Hossein Zare-Behtash, Prof Andrea Cammarano, Dr John LawsonProject description:Shock waves are integral to many engineering fields, playing a crucial role in the design and performance of aircraft, spacecraft, and propulsion systems. Additionally, shock wave interactions are significant in natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions and meteor impacts, as well as in medical applications like lithotripsy. This PhD project offers a unique opportunity to explore the fundamental dynamics of shock wave-particle interactions through a combination of experimental and computational approaches. The experimental component will involve the use of a state-of-the-art shock tube facility to introduce particles of varying sizes and materials. High-speed cameras and advanced laser diagnostics will be employed to capture and analyse the interaction dynamics, providing invaluable data.A key aspect of this project is the development of novel diagnostic techniques to enhance the accuracy and resolution of measurements. This includes the design and implementation of cutting-edge laser diagnostics and imaging methods to precisely track particle behaviour and shock wave propagation. These advancements will significantly improve our ability to understand and model these complex interactions, including their nonlinear dynamics. On the computational side, the project will focus on developing and validating numerical models using both in-house and commercial software tools. These models will simulate the behaviour of particles under shock wave conditions, enabling extensive parameter studies and optimisation. The ultimate goal of this research is to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical applications, offering insights that could lead to significant advancements in aerospace technology, medical treatments, and industrial processes. This project is ideal for a highly motivated student with a strong background in fluid dynamics, computational modelling, and experimental techniques.Candidate Characteristics:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Background in fluid dynamics, computational modelling, and experimental techniques.
  • Interest in using diagnostic tools and simulation software.
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.

What We Offer:

  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and equipment.
  • Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Comprehensive training in advanced experimental and computational techniques.
  • Supportive research environment with experienced supervisors.
  • Opportunities to present research at international conferences and publish in high-impact journals.

Join us in pushing the boundaries of knowledge and contributing to cutting-edge advancements in engineering and science.Entry RequirementsA very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).Closing date: 31 August 2025. Applications will be considered in the order that they are received.Funding: We offer a range of funding opportunities for both UK and international students, including Bursaries and Scholarships.
