PhD Studentship: Space Systems and Astrodynamics (ENG227)
University of Nottingham
Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD within the Faculty of Engineering in the Nottingham Geospatial Institute (NGI) Research Group at the University of Nottingham. This opportunity is ideal for motivated and enthusiastic candidates passionate about advancing space systems engineering and astrodynamics. This PhD will focus on formation flying, rendezvous, and in-orbit operations, incorporating astrodynamics and systems design. The research will explore trajectory optimization, robust guidance, navigation and control systems, and simulation of in-orbit docking and coordinated maneuvers. These critical areas aim to advance the capabilities of collaborative satellite operations and in-orbit servicing missions. The research will also align with broader topics within the group, such as miniaturized satellite technologies, GNSS, remote-sensing, data-driven astrodynamics, space mission design, solar sails, micro-thrusters for CubeSats, advanced attitude control, image-based orbital determination, inter-satellite communications, and space robotics. These contributions support efforts in space situational awareness, climate change mitigation, lunar communications, and nanosatellite-enabled deep-space exploration.Your Profile: * Eligible applicants must hold a UK Higher Education “Home Fee” status or satisfy the EU residency requirement of three years.
Funding Support:This studentship offers full funding, including tuition fees and a stipend, for 3 or 3.5 years, depending on the topic and subject to funding approval.Start Date: October 2025 (Early Start Possible)Supervisors: Dr. Chantal Cappelletti and Dr. Nishanth PushparajHow to Apply:Applicants should send their CVs and a one-page research statement, with covering email to or contact Supervisors at andInformal inquiries can also be directed to .While this studentship is fully funded (tuition fee + stipend) for eligible candidates, we also welcome applications from self-supported or sponsored students who are enthusiastic about contributing to cutting-edge research in space systems engineering and astrodynamics. We strongly encourage applications from diverse backgrounds to foster an inclusive and equitable research environment. Diversity enhances creativity, productivity, and the quality of our work, leading to a more profound societal and economic impact. The Faculty of Engineering is proud to hold an Athena SWAN Gold Award, reflecting our commitment to supporting and advancing women’s careers in engineering.
