Position description

The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace & Security (GIWPS)part of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) – seeks a Policy Writer to develop written content that advances the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and increases the visibility and impact of GIWPS.

The Policy Writer plays a critical role in translating original GIWPS research and analysis for a policy audience. They conduct substantive editing and copyediting of research reports, policy briefs, and other GIWPS content before publication; and manage additional responsibilities that include but are not limited to generating ideas for new types of content, writing original content in various voices, and conducting policy-relevant research. 

An excellent writer with experience writing persuasively for policy audiences, the Policy Writer quickly and accurately identifies and synthesizes key points, applies a deep understanding of effective messaging strategies for policy-relevant stakeholders, pays keen attention to detail, and is highly adaptable.

Highly organized with an ability to juggle competing projects and deadlines, they possess a strong collaborative spirit and an openness to feedback.

Duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Assisting with editing and proofing research reports and with the drafting, editing, and proofing of policy briefs, and other GIWPS content
  • Supporting the development of advocacy messages, talking points, and content on behalf of principals
  • Providing constructive feedback to enhance the overall quality of written materials
  • Helping to identify the best way to structure an argument to maximize the impact of the message; assisting in refining findings and recommendations; and recommending changes in content approach, emphasis, or presentation
  • Reviewing content and publications for tone, grammar, syntax, and formatting in alignment with established style guides and mission
  • Serving as the final content and style editor before publication of written products
  • Ensuring the targeted audience is being addressed and that the tone or level of presentation is appropriate
  • Modifying established methods or deriving new methods of presenting information to maximize understanding and utility among intended audiences
  • Consulting with team members on graphics and visuals for publications

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Director of External Affairs, the Policy Writer is part of a growing team of high-performing communications professionals, and works with various GIWPS staff to ensure that GIWPS’ messaging is reaching targeted audiences.

This position has been designated as Hybrid. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University.  Such review may necessitate a change to a position’s mode of work designation. Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$44,022.00 – $73,406.80

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.

Qualifications

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 3 years of experience writing or editing for policy audiences
  • Very strong verbal and written communication skills, with a track record of conveying complex research or public policy issues to non-specialists; of synthesizing information into well-written, clear messages; and of harmonizing language with an organizational voice
  • Ability to correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and proofread/edit materials
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and work independently
  • High degree of organization and excellent time-management skills
  • Ability to produce high-quality written work on tight timelines

Preferred Qualification

Familiarity with issues related to Women, Peace and Security
