Full-time, Fixed-term appointment to 30th September 2027The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is a world-leading institution dedicated to improving health through research, education, and capacity building in tropical medicine and global health. We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our internationally renowned Tropical Disease Biology Department , an internationally recognized centre of excellence in the study of pathogenesis of infectious diseases and at the forefront in the development of novel strategies for anti-infectiva.Primarily the post holder’s role will be to identify and characterize cellular genes modulating CHIKV entry. You will participate in the identification and characterisation of cellular genes modulating alphaviral infection. The role will involve exploring new avenues for therapy through analysis of cell-intrinsic innate immunity, antiviral restriction factors, and aspects cellular and species tropism. This work involves sophisticated knowledge on CL3 work, work with infectious viruses, molecular cloning and systems biology.Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead on the identification and characterization of cellular genes modulating alphaviral infection using genome-wide screens and functional assays
  • Plan, conduct and analyze bench level experiments and participate in the validation of protocols for quantifying alphaviral infection and spread
  • Lead on manuscript writing
  • Generate research publications / scientific reports
  • Contribute to the preparation and writing of scientific reports and peer-reviewed publications for the scientific community
  • Provide efficient and effective technical advice concerning quantitative and qualitative aspects of projects
  • Produce and disseminate research outputs

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-national research team. You will have well-developed research skills with the ability to effectively present research findings in oral and written format. You will also demonstrate:

  • PhD qualification in relevant subject (awarded or submitted)
  • Experience of working to health and safety regulations and legal requirements
  • Experience in the use of quantitative research methods, including data collection and performing statistical analysis
  • Strong computer/analytical skills with competency in basic statistical software and R or equivalent to accurately analyse data
  • Background in virology/immunology (desirable)
  • Experience of working with complex cell culture (desirable)
