Full time: 35 Hours per WeekThe School of Economics is growing and is seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Researcher. The research focus of this post is on sorting in the labour market, and the post is funded by the UKRI Horizon Europe Guarantee Grant “Multidimensional Sorting with Imperfectly Transferable Utility”. The successful candidate is expected to support the Principal Investigator (Dr Paweł Gola) in achieving the goals of the project; there are no teaching obligations connected to this post.Successful candidates will have a strong commitment to producing internationally excellent research. An ideal candidate would have demonstrated proficiency with structural modelling of the labour market, but candidates with demonstrable familiarity with sorting/matching models will be considered even without experience with data analysis. Applicants should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in economics or related field, and have demonstrable potential to publish their research in leading refereed journals.Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Paweł Gola, Associate Professor of Economics:Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Have a PhD in Economics or be within 3 months of completion of a PhD at the start of the post in August 2025.
  • Must be able to demonstrate an existing or developing record of research with potential for publication in leading peer-reviewed journals in economics.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to make an outstanding contribution to the research activities and intellectual life of the School of Economics.
  • Have experience with sorting/matching models and/or structural modelling of labour markets
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.

In the eighteenth-century, Adam Smith lived and worked in the city. His first lectures to young lawyers in 1748-51 were delivered near where the South Bridge now stands. In his later years, he continued to revise his principal books The Theory of Moral Sentiments and the Wealth of Nations, and a substantial portion of Smith’s personal library is held by Edinburgh University Library. His friend David Hume, a resident of Edinburgh, noted in his day as a historian and now as a leading empiricist philosopher, wrote much acclaimed essays on economics.Today, the School of Economics includes 56 academic staff and team of 29 administrative and technical support staff, as well as visiting Professors and other associates. The academic staff include eleven professors, six senior lecturers, three senior teaching fellows, fourteen lecturers, one reader, and one teaching fellow.The School is characterised by its cohesiveness and informal research-led collegiality, with high quality research seminars and workshop programmes running on a weekly basis. The School has special research strength in economic theory, labour economics and applied econometrics in addition to an array of more dispersed expertise. In terms of the proportion of publications that are classified as world-leading, the School is ranked 1st in Scotland and 7th in the UK.
