The Role

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher with a background in the social sciences to work on the YouGAMSI project, ‘Assessing the exposure of young people to gambling marketing through sport on the island of Ireland’.

The project is funded under the North-South Research Programme, a collaborative research scheme funded by the Government’s Shared Ireland Fund and administered by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) on behalf of the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.

The project is led by Professors Aphra Kerr and John O’Brennan from the Department of Sociology at Maynooth University,  and by Dr. Paul Kitchin, from the School of Sport at Ulster University (Belfast).

The project began in Sept 2022 when a postdoc was hired to work at Ulster University, Belfast. This advertisement is for a postdoc to be hired into Maynooth University, to begin work on the second phase of the project. This project is comparing the exposure of youth and young adults (14-17 years and 18-24 years) to gambling marketing related to live sports on broadcast and online media across the island of Ireland.  

In the upcoming second year the project will 1) assess the extent of such marketing on traditional broadcast and online media and determine how such marketing targets young people, 2) work with partner charities, Extern Problem Gambling and Gambling with Lives, to develop educational resources to raise awareness of the range of harms that gambling can lead to. 3) Contribute to the evidence base and policy discussions currently ongoing in Stormont and Dublin in relation to updating gambling regulatory regimes in both jurisdictions.

The postdoc will conduct original research that 1) examines the content and methods used by media companies to market gambling through sport to young people on a range of digital and traditional media channels 2) Work with partner charities to develop and pilot educational resources and 3) Contribute with the research team to ongoing policy discussions on the island of Ireland in relation to gambling marketing.

The primary focus of the role is on conducting excellent research and on disseminating this research through academic journal articles, international conferences, policy contributions, and public events. There will be opportunities to develop new research projects in collaboration with other researchers and/or external parties.

The postdoc will be located with other postgraduate researchers and academic staff working on externally funded research projects in the Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute (MUSSI) at Maynooth University in Co. Kildare, Ireland.

Salary

Postdoctoral researcher (2023):                               €42,033 p.a. (1 point)

Appointments will be made in accordance with public sector pay provisions.
