Whichever area you specialise in this is a place to do great science for a good cause.As the national laboratory for nuclear fission in the UK, we are harnessing nuclear science to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges.The UKNNL Effluents, HALES and Environmental Chemistry team, based at UKNNL’s Central Laboratory on the Sellafield site, play an important part in the provision of nuclear decommissioning and environmental clean-up services.UKNNL is looking for an experimental chemist (or similar) to join this team. You will work closely with technical leads, team members and interact with a range of internal and external customers. The role is lab based (inactive and active) and will support the provision of nuclear decommissioning and environmental clean-up services with an emphasis on nuclear effluent abatement processes.To join the UKNNL Post Doctorate programme you will have a PhD in chemistry, radiochemistry, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, or geochemistry ideally with a focus on nuclear applications.You will also have a Masters or Bachelors degree in chemistry (or comparable subject).You will have the right to work in the UK and be able to achieve SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).Main ResponsibilitiesWe are developing the next generation of technical experts. Not only will you receive the opportunity to work on challenging and exciting projects, but you’ll continually learn from skilled and knowledgeable industry experts who are leaders in their field. We will help you become everything you can be, by challenging, stretching, and pushing you to your limits while supporting you every step of the way.You will have the opportunity to contribute to a range of projects primarily for Sellafield Ltd.Your duties will include:
- Supporting technical leads and project managers to identify requirements
- Writing proposals for research and other customer work
- Designing and conducting experiments
- Providing experimental data and data analysis
- Technical report writing
- Supporting junior members of the team to conduct work through training and cross team communication
- The potential to work on internally funded research projects
