Job description

Postdoc in single cell RNA-Sequencing and Functional Genomics in Cardiovascular BiologyWe invite applicants for a postdoc Research Associate position for a new project in Dr Helle Jørgensen’s group in the Heart and Lung Research Institute at the University of Cambridge. The position is available for 3 years in the first instance. The Jørgensen group studies regulation of cell plasticity and heterogeneity in vascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis. We have demonstrated remarkable transcriptional and functional heterogeneity of smooth muscle cells and identified regulatory mechanisms relevant for disease. The group combines computational analysis of single cell profiling with functional analyses in a collaborative environment. Examples of our work include Chappell 2016, Circ Res; Dobnikar/Taylor 2018, Nat Comms, Lambert/Oc 2024, Nature Cardiovas Res, Taylor 2024 bioRxiv. We are now seeking a highly talented and motivated individual to join our team to identify mechanisms underlying the heterogeneous cellular responses in human arteries with an aim to improve prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The project will involve generation and mining of genomic datasets (e.g. single cell RNA-seq, ATAC-seq and ChIP-seq), in vitro screens, mechanistic and functional analysis using both in vitro and in vivo disease models. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with both computational data analysis and in an experimental research setting. Experience in functional genomics, computational data analysis, molecular and cell biology and/or in vivo vascular disease models (at least two of these) is required. Knowledge of gene regulation, control of cell phenotype and cardiovascular biology would be an advantage but is not essential.Essential skills – PhD degree, or submitted thesis, in a relevant area (e.g. biological science or a numeric discipline with experience in experimental research) – Conceptual understanding of gene regulation and functional genomics, ideally using single cell technologies – Interest in cardiovascular biology – Ability to plan and manage own research project – Proactive attitude and drive – Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team – Attention to detail and ability to multi-task – Experience in writing scientific manuscripts – Experience presenting ideas and findingsDesirable skills – Experience in molecular and cell biology – Experience with animal models or primary cell culture – Knowledge of R and/or Python – Strong publication record – Knowledge of cardiovascular biology – UK Home Office Personal LicenceCandidates in the process of submitting their PhD thesis or awaiting degree conferral will be considered. In this case, appointment would be at the level of Research Assistant, Grade 5. On receipt of PhD award, the appointee would move to Grade 7, Research Associate.Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to Dr Helle Jørgensen atFixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check, a health assessment and a security check.Click the ‘Apply’ button below to register an account with our recruitment system (if you have not already) and apply online. Please ensure that you outline how you match the criteria for the post and why you are applying for this role on the online application form. Please include details of your referees, including email address and phone number, one of which must be your most recent line manager. Please quote reference RC43334 on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy. The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society. The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.Further information
