Job Summary:
A NIH funded Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the Martínez-De Luna Laboratory in the Center for Vision Research (CVR) https://www.upstate.edu/cvr (https://www.upstate.edu/cvr)) to investigate basic mechanisms by which the extracellular matrix regulates retinal ganglion cell axon routing at the optic chiasm. Specializing in developmental biology, we focus on how the extracellular matrix guides the development and connectivity of retinal ganglion cells, which are responsible for transmitting all visual information to the brain. We aim to uncover strategies that exploit the extracellular matrix to prevent blindness.
The Postdoctoral Associate will design, perform, and analyze experiments in the field of retinal cell biology, studying the basic mechanisms of retinal axon guidance by the extracellular matrix. The candidate will also report results to the Principal Investigator and prepare research presentations and manuscripts. The ideal candidate should possess strong critical thinking skills, be highly motivated, and be able to work independently and as part of a team. Our lab and the CVR provide a stimulating environment as well as opportunities for growth and career development.
The CVR is the research arm of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, comprising 16 funded faculty members with joint appointments in Neuroscience, Developmental and Cell, and Molecular Departments, leading vigorous basic and translational projects in a new state of the art facility. Programs span multiple disciplines, including developmental biology, retinal physiology, cell biology, biophysics, neuroscience, biochemistry, molecular biology, matrix biology, and tissue engineering. Postdoctoral Associates will receive broad training in multidisciplinary biomedical research and career mentorship.
Minimum Qualifications:
A PhD in Developmental, Cell, Molecular Biology or Neurobiology/Neuroscience with evidence of a publication record. The candidate should have high proficiency in basic wet lab skills that include tissue/cell culture, detection of gene and protein expression, and confocal microscopy. Expertise in vision science is not required.
