Job description

Salary for this Role:From £43,210 with benefits, subject to skills and experienceJob Title:Postdoctoral Fellow – Cell fate and gene regulation groupReports to: Folkert Van WervenClosing Date: 31/Aug/2024 23.59 GMTJob Description:Postdoctoral Fellow – Cell fate and gene regulation groupContact term: This is a full time (4 years) position on Crick terms and conditions of employment. The Research GroupAn exciting opportunity to be part of a pioneering biomedical research institute, dedicated to innovation and science. A postdoctoral research post in the laboratory of Folkert van Werven to study Transcription/RNA biology is now available. We are looking for a highly motivated researcher in with a strong affinity for molecular biology and biochemistry, but also candidates with backgrounds in genomics, genetics, and computational biology will be considered. I exact project will be formulated together with the candidate, but is likely on the interface of transcription, noncoding RNAs, and RNA modifications. We use budding yeast and mammalian in vitro cell culture systems as model. The successful applicant will have good communication and organisational skills and a PhD in either Molecular biology/Biochemistry/Genomics/Computational Biology (or be in the final stages of completion). The ProjectCell differentiation programs depend on dynamic and global changes in gene expression to ensure proper morphologic changes. How regulation of gene expression is controlled during cell fate changes is often not well understood. The laboratory of Folkert van Werven uses budding yeast and mammalian cells to study how RNA expression is regulated when cells change from one state to another. Specifically, we have focused on understanding the roles of transcription, transcript heterogeneity including noncoding RNAs, RNA isoforms, and RNA modifications. The van Werven lab studies basic questions such as: What is the role of noncoding transcription in gene regulation? How do transcript isoforms control gene expression? How do RNA modifications control the fate of transcripts? The successful candidate will work with members of the research group, but also with various science technology platforms.Details of research projects currently being undertaken can be seen at: . Research techniques used in the laboratory include: basic techniques of biochemistry, molecular biology, various genomic approaches, genetics, and microscopy. Postdoctoral Training Fellows are expected to lead their own projects, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis (both in the lab and with external collaborators). The ability to work in a team is essential.Postdoctoral Fellows will lead their own projects, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis (both in the lab and with external collaborators) and may guide PhD students in their research. The ability to work in a team is essential. Noteworthy is that the group of Folkert van Werven will move before the spring of 2027, and the postdoctoral fellow is expected to move with the group.Key experience and competenciesThe post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, imaginative, open, dynamic and collegial. The ideal candidate must have:Strong interest in and desire to do basic research in transcription/RNA biologyAffinity with techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, genetics, and genomicsApart from working on the main project, a successful candidate should also be able to help others and collaborate with members of the research groupEssentialPhD in either Molecular biology/Biochemistry/Genomics/Genetics/Computational Biology or in the final stages of PhD submissionTrack record of writing papers as evidenced by publications or submitted manuscripts in referred journalsEvidence of data presentation at scientific meetingsAbility to work independently as well as interacting within a groupDesirableTechnical expertise in various molecular biology and biochemical techniques and data analysesExperience in using yeast as model including yeast geneticsExperience in RNA related techniques (such as RNA-seq and CLIP-seq)Experience with bioinformatics and genomicsAbout UsAt the Crick, we conduct research at the forefront of biomedical research. We combine rigour with an open and collaborative culture, and are outward-looking, reflecting our status as a partnership of six organisations aiming to pool knowledge, ideas and resources. We have a wide research portfolio with no divisions or departments, bringing biomedical researchers together with clinicians, physical scientists and applied scientists from our pharmaceutical partners. We aim to attract the most talented researchers and support them to tackle innovative research questions. Our science technology platforms provide our researchers with access to state-of-the-art technology and expertise. We provide an excellent learning environment with dedicated education programmes in public engagement with science, education and personal development, and a postdoc training programme that prepares scientists for leadership roles in science. If you are interested in applying for this role, please apply via our .The closing date for applications is 31st of August at 23:59All offers of employment are subject to successful security screening and continuous eligibility to work in the United Kingdom. If you require a visa to work in the UK we will help support your application should you be successfulEquality, Diversity & InclusionWe welcome applications from all backgrounds.
