DescriptionThis is a full-time position for a 1 year period with the possibility of renewal, contingent on satisfactory performance and funding. PositionApplicants are invited to apply for a Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Translating Research in Elder Care (TREC) research program situated at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. TREC is a pan-Canadian and international longitudinal health services and knowledge translation program of applied research situated in long term care (LTC or nursing homes). It is multidisciplinary with approximately 30 researchers from 8 universities and 20 core decision makers; it functions in an integrated KT or partnered model. We have long standing relationships with stakeholders, end users, policy makers and our citizen advisory group. TREC maintains a cohort of 60-100 homes depending on phase and has a world-class database that has been running continuously for 17 years.Additional information about the TREC research program is available at the following URL: .

• This position focuses on the impact of caring for LTC residents with a history of psychological trauma and its main source of interview data are care aides in a variety of LTC Homes.
• Working for a 1 to 2 year period under the direction of Dr Carole Estabrooks (TREC Scientific Director), the postdoctoral fellow will undertake and complete a qualitative study that is ongoing.

This project has a number of important outputs and outcomes:

• A completed analysis and narrative describing the experience of these care aides as they care for residents whom they believe have a history of psychological trauma
• Identification at minimum, of challenges and facilitators to this care
• 1 – 2 high quality scientific papers
• Briefs and reports to senior policy makers that will inform the provinces efforts to develop a trauma informed care framework
• Scientific meeting/conference presentations
• Identification of strategies that will assist LTC staff to care for this population of residents and that could be potentially evaluated This position will be physically located at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta.

Additional collaborative opportunities are also available through the TREC scientific team and stakeholder groups situated in the provincial government, health zones, LTC homes, etc.Duties

• This large-scale, mixed methods project uses sequential exploratory and confirmatory designs.
• In collaboration with the project coordinator, the postdoctoral fellow will follow the project timeline of the mixed-methods project, produce reports for the different panels to refine the analyses in a series of action cycles, support/lead the writing of scientific papers etc.
• The postdoctoral fellow will have additional opportunities to collaborate with TREC researchers, research assistants, and staff on various TREC projects.

Qualifications

• A PhD in a relevant field is an absolute requirement
• Knowledge, skill and experience in qualitative research is an absolute requirement
• Outstanding and demonstrated skills writing for peer reviewed publications
• Demonstrated proficiency in data management software (e.g., NVIVO, Quirkos, Atlas.ti)
• Excellent project management skills
• Excellent verbal communication skills
• Ability to work with a high degree of independence and initiative
• Ability to make and adhere to self-imposed timelines
• Background in health and specifically LTC is an asset
• Candidate able to begin the position by April 1, 2024 at latest
