DescriptionA postdoctoral fellow position is available at the Peter and Doris Kule Centre for Ukrainian and Canadian Folklore at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. We seek a highly motivated candidate with experience with research-creation as methodology, and a strong background in Ukrainian Canadian Folklore, specifically oral and visual traditions integrated with music. The position starts October 1, 2024, and is for one year with the possibility of renewal.KULE POSTDOCTORAL POSITION 2024-25Research-Creation, Digital Music Preservation, and Interpreting Ukrainian Canadian EthnographyA Kule Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Research-Creation, Digital Music Preservation, and Interpretation of Ukrainian Canadian Ethnography will be offered in 2024-25 by the Peter & Doris Kule Folklore Centre for Ukrainian and Canadian Folklore (Kule Folklore Centre; KuFC) at the University of Alberta. The fellowship is for one year (with the possibility of renewal, subject to review and funding).Although all applications in fields associated with folkloric expressions (oral, material, performative) will be considered, research proposals in the areas related to Digital Music Preservation and Interpretation of Ukrainian Canadian Ethnography will be given preference.The successful candidate will be working as a part of the Kule Folklore Centre team to explore the materials in the Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archives and the potential intersections of knowledge related to but not limited to, digitalization, music, and folk art. In addition, the Kule Post-Doctoral Fellow will also be expected to assist with the preservation of the fieldwork of Dr. Robert Klymasz, host a workshop on research-creation, and participate in the overall program planning and activities of the Kule Folklore Centre and Medwidsky Archives.To Qualify:

  • Applicants must have received a PhD (or Candidate of Sciences degree from Ukraine or another post-Soviet country) within the past four years at the time of application. Applicants scheduled to receive their degree by the end of December 31, 2024 are also eligible to apply if they submit confirmatory documents.
  • The successful applicant will be expected to take up the post-doctoral appointment at the Kule Folklore Centre from 1 October, but no later than 31 October 2024.
  • The applicants must be fluent in Ukrainian. Knowledge of Ukrainian vernacular culture and folklore is an asset.
  • This competition is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and foreign nationals.

The postdoctoral position will be accorded salary and benefits in accordance with experience and policies for postdoctoral fellows at the University of Alberta. The annual stipend is C$39,566. In addition to the stipend, the award includes supplemental health benefits.
