Overview

About the Role

A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available in the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London (QM) under the supervision of Dr Ana Jorge Sobrido, as part of a recently funded UKRI Future Leader Fellowship research programme on Sustainable Materials for Advanced Flow Batteries.

About You

You should hold a PhD (close to completion) in Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Materials Science or similar. You should be able to provide evidence of expertise in materials synthesis and characterisation, and a willingness to develop expertise in all areas that will be required for the project. Experience in electrochemical characterization techniques, and in particular energy storage is essential. Experience in redox flow batteries is highly desirable. Experience in in situ techniques is highly desirable. Self-motivation and ability to work as part of a team are essential.

About the School

This post is within the School of Engineering and Materials Science, a large School with 70-80 academics and a similar number of postdoctoral research staff. There are around 1000 undergraduate and taught postgraduate students and 220 PhD students, supported by an administrative and technical staff team of 45. The successful candidate will join a team of six PhD students working on materials for energy storage and conversion applications, including photoelectrochemistry, oxygen electrocatalysis and redox flow batteries. The successful candidate will conduct in situ and operando studies on electrode materials for redox flow batteries, combining electrochemistry and spectroscopic techniques. The materials have been developed by another PDRA, who has already been working on the project for a year. An additional PDRA is also being advertised to conduct full cell testing, bringing together an exciting team that is expected to work closely as part of this UKRI FLF research programme.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time (35 hours per week) fixed term appointment for 2 years, with an expected start date of Summer 2023. The starting salary will be Grade 4 in the range of £36,411 – £43,592 per annum pro rata, inclusive of London Allowance.

Reasonable adjustments will be made for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
