About the Role

The postdoctoral research assistant will play a key role contributing to a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project: ‘What does artificial intelligence mean for the future of democratic society? Examining the societal impact of AI and whether human rights can respond’.

The project looks at the unintended consequences associated with pervasive AI-enabled surveillance and has two key objectives. First, understanding the societal impact associated with pervasive digital surveillance, and the incorporation of the product of this surveillance into a range of consequential State and non-State decision-making processes. A particular concern is the potential impact on the processes by which individuals develop their identity/personality, and how this may in turn affect the functioning of democratic society. Second, developing the human rights law framework in order to better respond to the challenges posed by the digital era, with a focus on understanding how human rights law can better protect identity formation and democratic functioning.

This postdoctoral position will primarily, although not exclusively, contribute to the first objective.

The successful applicant will have an interest in technology, and in ensuring that technological developments serve societal needs, and advance human rights protection. Good communication skills are essential. The project intends to produce world leading academic work that has a tangible non-academic impact.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time, fixed term appointment for 30 months, with an expected start date of 1st June 2023. The starting salary will be Grade 5, £44,745 to £45,931 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
