Job description
Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Hydrogen Production Chemical Reaction Mechanisms
Central OxfordWe are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Hydrogen Production Chemical Reaction Mechanisms to join Torr Vision Group at the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford). The post is funded by the SCGC-FIRST Innovation Award and is fixed-term for 1 year.We aim to develop cost-effective, carbon-neutral hydrogen production via ammonia synthesis and decomposition, using Reinforcement Learning to understand the chemical reaction mechanisms. Green ammonia production is crucial for achieving net-zero emissions, with its storage and distribution supported by existing infrastructure. Our primary objective is to enhance the cost-effectiveness of ammonia synthesis and decomposition processes. Despite the recognized importance of ammonia synthesis, evidenced by three Nobel Prizes, its reaction mechanisms remain not fully understood. To address these gaps, we are utilizing AI to autonomously identify chemical reaction mechanisms. Our approach combines deep learning for predicting potential energy surfaces and reinforcement learning for mapping reaction pathways, aiming to accurately identify reaction mechanisms and their energy profiles. You will be responsible for demonstrating AI’s role in chemical research, developing and implementing novel methods for interpretable, safe, and aligned machine learning systems. You should possess a PhD or DPhil (or near completion of) in Machine Learning. You should have knowledge of Analyzing and interpreting experimental data and AI in research. You should have the ability to manage your own academic research and associated activities.Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Philip Torr (email: [email protected])For more information about working at the Department, seewww.eng.ox.ac.uk/about/work-with-us/Only online applications received before midday on 21st June 2024 can be considered. You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position), CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application. The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.Machine Learning, AI Safety, Hydrogen Production
