Postdoctoral Research Associate in Modelling the Sustainable Control of Parasites in Ewes – Grade 7
University of Liverpool
This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral scientist to contribute to the development of recommendations for sustainable parasite control in UK sheep as part of the BBSRC-funded SCOPE project (Sustainable Control of Parasites in Ewes) by observing and modelling changes in parasite population genetic structure in response to anthelmintic treatments. You will form part of a team of academics, postdoctoral fellows and technical staff that is focused on delivering high-quality data and mathematical models to inform the response to emerging veterinary parasitic disease threats and the impacts of global change on disease risk worldwide. You will work with Dr Hannah Rose Vineer within the Veterinary Parasitology research group, which sits within the Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences’ (IIVES) Department of Infection Biology & Microbiomes. You will also work closely with colleagues at the University of Liverpool’s Ness Heath Farm, other project staff, and project partners. You must be creative, diligent with the capability to plan your own workload, and able to work to the highest standards of scientific rigour. You will be expected to work as part of a team, and independently once appropriate guidance has been provided.A PhD in a biological science, computer science, mathematics or statistics, and relevant experience in modelling population dynamics or infectious disease dynamics in a programming environment, is required. You should have a doctoral-level qualification (achieved or expected within three months). Any applicants who are still awaiting their PhD to be awarded should be aware that if successful, they will be appointed at grade 6, spine point 30. Upon submitting written confirmation that they have been successful in being awarded their PhD, they will be moved onto grade 7, spine point 31 from the date of their award. The main duties include developing a new model describing parasitic infections in periparturient ewes, integrating this with an existing model of parasite transmission in lambs, and further developing this to simulate changes in population genetic structure following anthelmintic treatments. You will also assist with field and lab work associated with a field trial of anthelmintic treatments and liaise with other project partners and staff to develop the models and design outputs that can be delivered to stakeholders (farmers/veterinarians).For full details and to apply online, please visit:£38,205 to £44,264 per annum
