About the roleWe are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and driven Postdoctoral Research Associate who is excited to develop a career in scientific discovery, to join the laboratory of Dr Oliver Crook. You will have a background in functional proteomics with experience in hypothesis-driven research. Plasmodium is a deadly parasite and is the cause of malaria, a disease that kills 600,000 people a year. As part of the lab, you will investigate how the parasite employs several techniques to manipulate red blood cells (RBCs).The parasite exploits time, space and scale to refashion the RBC as a home. Projects involve using mass-spectrometry to understand how the parasite manipulates red blood cells system-wide and at the level of individual proteins or complexes.You will be part of the Department of Chemistry and based in state-of-the-art labs within the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Discovery, New Biochemistry Building, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QU . You will have access to cutting edge mass-spectrometry, the lab currently houses 11 instruments and other equipment as part of the Kavli Institute. We closely collaborate with Professor Matt Higgins, an expert molecular parasitologist and structural biologist within the Kavli Institute.This full-time fixed-term post is funded generously by the Medical Research Council for up to 42 months in the first instance.About youApplicants must hold a PhD in a relevant subject area, (or be close to completion) prior to taking up the appointment. The research requires extensive experience in functional proteomics and molecular biology. You will have the ability to manage your own academic research and previous experience of scientific output.You are expected to have excellent attention to detail and communication skills.
