The Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Wireless Communications, to work on a project funded by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in collaboration with Professor Mohammad-Slim Alouini.

The successful applicant will be expected to organise and conduct exciting research in the network-in-box solution to on-demand 6G for resilient and ubiquitous networking, which is part of a joint international effort to connect billions of “the unconnected” people in the world. They will work closely with Prof Yunfei Chen. They will also take direction from Prof Mohammad-Slim Alouini in relation to the various work packages.  As such, there is an expectation that the successful candidate will engage with both groups at Durham and KAUST involved in the projects. They will have primary responsibility for wireless communications theory development using mathematical and statistical tools, such as convex optimization, and for the production of publishable outputs, as well as regular reports to the project partners.

Responsibilities:

  • To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications.
  • To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include: research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences.
  • To publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • To assist with the development of research objectives and proposals.
  • To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • To work with the Principal Investigator and other colleagues at Durham and KAUST, as appropriate, to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.
  • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator and offering creative or innovative solutions.
  • To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
  • To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects.
  • To deliver training in research techniques/approaches to peers, visitors and students as appropriate.
  • To be involved in student supervision, as appropriate, and assist with the assessment of the knowledge of students.
  • To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.
  • To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline.
  • To engage in continuing professional development by participation in the undergraduate or postgraduate teaching programmes or by membership of departmental committees, etc. and by attending relevant training and development courses.  

This post is fixed term for 12 months as the funding is available for a fixed period only. 

The post-holder is employed to work on a research project which will be led by Professor Yunfei Chen. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

    Essential Criteria:

    Qualifications

    1.     A PhD in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a related subject.

    Experience

    2.     Proven ability and evidence of high-quality research output in relevant field.

    3.     Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly ranked journals.

    4.     Demonstrable ability to present research papers at national and international conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community.

    5.     Experience in post-specific experience required, e.g. technical expertise.

    6.     Sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

    7.     Strong communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

    Skills

    8.     Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings.

    9.     Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines.

    10.  Good IT skills including Microsoft Office and proven ability to use IT to write technical research papers and presentations.

    Desirable Criteria:

    Experience

    11.  Strong background in wireless communications, in particular, the use of convex optimization tools and relevant programming languages.

    12.  Experience of overseeing students with respect to the development of their practical/research skills e.g. acting as a demonstrator; supervising student projects/practicals.
