Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA)Oxford’s School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA) is one of the largest communities of Area Studies scholars anywhere in the world. This vibrant and dynamic University department has research and teaching programmes dedicated to Africa, China, Latin America, the Middle East, Japan, Russia and Eastern Europe, South Asia and Comparative Area Studies. The School welcomes students from all around the globe and offers seven MSc Degrees, six MPhil degrees, a DPhil in Area Studies, as well as the Oxford 1+1 MBA with Saïd Business School.About the Role:The Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies at OSGA invites applications from candidates with relevant qualifications and experience for a full-time, 12-month fixed-term Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Japanese Studies who will be offered a unique opportunity to launch their post-doctoral career, to conduct independent research, while gaining teaching experience at Oxford.The fellowship is available from either 1st September or 1st October 2024.Working closely with the Nissan Institute Director, the successful candidate will co-lead and develop the field of Japanese Societies at Oxford, cultivate scholarly links, contribute to the organisation of research seminars and conferences, and to the wider intellectual life of the Nissan Institute and OSGA. Apart from pursuing a vibrant, independent research agenda, they will also contribute towards teaching in their area of expertise: Main teaching duties and responsibilities will include offering a graduate course on Japanese Society, contributing to the methodology course for Master’s programs in Japanese studies, supporting the undergraduate program in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (FAMES).About You:Applicants from all academic fields and who have a research record appropriate to their career stage will be considered. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD (or be near completion) in sociology, anthropology, human geography, development studies, politics, or area studies related to Japanese societies, with a strong depth and breadth of knowledge in the subject.
