Offer DescriptionMicrobiologyLocation: Highfield CampusSalary: £34,980 to £42,978 per annumFull Time Fixed Term for two yearsClosing Date: Thursday 01 August 2024Interview Date: To be confirmedReference: 2800224BJThis multi-disciplinary project offers an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong interest in exploring the interactions of microbial cells with each other and their environment.The post holder will develop innovative approaches to define the mechanisms of chemical and physical interactions between cells that result in changes in gene expression, metabolism, cell morphology or even inhibition of competing populations. Findings will be both fundamentally important and provide insights into e.g., the filamentous/invasive growth of pathogenic yeast, novel microbial strategies to suppress spoilage organisms in foods and beverages, or opportunities to disrupt the impact of vector insects such as the pest Drosophila suzukii fruit flyThe post holder will join the lab of Prof Vladimir Jiranek that recently relocated to the University of Southampton ( ), and have the opportunity to interact with several PhD students working on related topics in the context of a diverse and successful School of Biological Sciences ( ). The Jiranek lab also works extensively with international yeast biotechnology companies, thereby offering a vital industrial perspective on the work and the potential for future joint funding or employment opportunities.Based in the Life Sciences Building at the University’s Highfield Campus, the post is ERE level 4, full time and available for 2 years in the first instance. 1.5 hr train journey from London and near international airports linking you to the world.Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent professional qualification and experience in microbiology, biotechnology or a related field.Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.
