Postdoctoral Researcher in Enhanced Forecasting for Energy Applications

Job title:

Postdoctoral Researcher in Enhanced Forecasting for Energy Applications

Company

University of Reading

Job description

The University of Reading’s , a world leading institute for atmospheric science research, is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic researcher to join its to develop innovative methods to enhance meteorological forecast skill from days to months ahead. A core focus will be to combine the use of physical-, statistical and machine-learning- based methods to enhance predictability, particularly for use in energy-sector applications.Fixed term post, up to 36 months.Weather is a key source of risk for energy systems. The transformation of the energy sector – including the electrification of heating and increasing dependence on renewables – means that the need for high-quality forecast information to mitigate the physical and financial impact of weather has never been greater. S2S (‘subseasonal-to-seaonal’) forecasts offer exciting new opportunities for addressing these risks yet the use of forecasts in applications beyond a few days-ahead remains limited. The goal of this project will be to develop AI-based techniques to merge multi-modal forecast information (e.g., weather-typing and conditional information, statistical predictors, multi-model NWP ensembles) to generate tractable, transparent and skillful forecasts at lead-times days to months ahead. Working closely with the industry partner (British Gas / Centrica), you will have the opportunity to apply these forecasts directly into energy-sector applications. You can expect to publish and disseminate your work widely via open access journals, datasets, code and conferences. You will have :

  • Strong scientific analytical skills relevant to the mathematical and physical sciences
  • Strong scientific computing and programming skills
  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Knowledge of numerical weather prediction methods (particularly ensemble forecasting)
  • Willingness to engage constructively and effectively with an industry partner

Application Guidance

  • As part of your application, please include a concise statement outlining why you are interested in applying and why you feel you are well suited to this role based on the experience and skills you would bring to it. Optionally, you may also choose to briefly outline specific areas or topics that you feel you would like to explore as part of the project.
  • Please be mindful of both the scientific and the industrial engagement aspects of the project in your statement. This is not a research proposal and we are not expecting you to provide detailed methodologies, literature reviews or research results.
  • Please limit your statement to a maximum of 500 words (approximately 1-side of A4 using 11-point font). It is recommended that you consider the structure of your statement, using sub-sections and/or bullet points as appropriate.
