Postdoctoral Researcher in Thrombosis Research
University of York
This is a 36-month project funded by the British Heart Foundation focussing on the role of platelets in the cardiovascular comorbidities associated with Diabetes. The project will take place within the laboratory of Dr Giordano Pula within the Biomedical Insititute for Multimorbidity (BIM) of the Hull York Medical School (HYMS) at the University of Hull. This study will focus on human platelets and will utilise clinical samples from the Allam Diabetes Centre of the Hull Royal Infirmary (HRI) obtained under the supervision of Prof Thozhukat Sathyapalan. This project is part of a collaboration with the Institute for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research (ICMR) of the University of Reading, where a second postdoctoral scientist under the supervision of Prof Jon Gibbins will perform complementary experiments focusing on the role platelet in thrombotic complication of diabetes. This collaborative and multidisciplinary job opportunity was funded by the British Heart Foundation a Special Project Grant entitled “Plasma microvesicles cause diabetes-dependent platelet hyperactivity and thrombosis (MV-DISPLAY)” (SP/F/24/150062).This position requires the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicentre team. In addition to coordinating the collection of clinical samples within the Allam Diabetes Centre of the HRI, the postdoctoral scientist holding this position will handle human blood samples to obtain information regarding the alteration of platelet biochemistry and physiology occurring in diabetes. A variety of cell biology techniques (ranging from live cell imaging to flow cytometry to in vitro vascular modelling) and biochemistry approaches (ranging from immunoblotting to second messenger analyses and oxidative stress analyses) will be applied. In addition, clinical material will be utilised to prepare samples to send to our collaborators at the University of York for proteomics studies and to the University of Reading for functional and cell signalling-dedicated experiments. The ability to maintain records of the experiments, analyse and interpret experimental data, and summarise them in oral and written communications for publication will be essential for success in this role. Highly ambitious candidates aiming to start a successful academic career in cardiovascular biology will be prioritized. The terms of the grant that fund this position require that employment commences no later than 01 / 10 / 2024.To discuss this role informally, please contact Dr Giordano Pula (HYMS/BIM),The University strives to be diverse and inclusive – a place where we can ALL be ourselves. We particularly encourage applications from people who identify as Black, Asian or from a Minority Ethnic background, who are underrepresented at the University. We offer family friendly, flexible working arrangements, with forums and inclusive facilities to support our staff.
