Press & Policy Officer

Position description

The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting, preserving, and defending media freedom and professional journalism across Europe. Based in Leipzig, Germany, ECPMF operates as a European co-operative.

ECPMF leads the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) in partnership with six other organisations, a programme financed by the European Commission. We are seeking a Press & Policy Officer to join our communication team and help publicise our work under MFRR and other projects, develop policy responses, and strengthen our advocacy efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote the organisation’s work by drafting and disseminating newsletters, press releases, interviews, and other outreach materials.
  • Coordinate and expand media coverage of the organisation’s activities, ensuring timely responses to press inquiries.
  • Develop and draft policy responses and advocacy outputs, including statements, open letters, submissions to international organisations, and mission briefings.
  • Support the communication needs of other ECPMF, NED, and MFRR activities, including events, missions, and protection initiatives.
  • Maintain and update content on the organisation’s websites.

Qualifications

  • Academic background in social sciences, journalism, PR, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • At least two years of professional experience in a communications role; experience within civil society is an advantage.
  • Proficiency with content-management systems, mailing lists, databases,  and Google Workspace tools.
  • Strong writing skills, including creating copy and proofreading/editing.
  • Proven English language skills (C1-C2); additional languages (especially German and Russian) are an advantage.
  • Quick and precise understanding of political issues and a strong commitment to press and media freedom.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience in cultivating relationships with journalists.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and resilience in daily work.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM US

  • Salary based on the German public collective agreement TVL 12 (gross salary 3780 – 4050 EUR depending on experience).
  • Contract with a possible option for extension.
  • 30 days of leave per calendar year in addition to public holidays.
  • Individual training budget.
  • Possibility to travel as necessary.
  • A strong and highly motivated team.
  • Work from home in Germany, with at least three office days per week in Leipzig
  • A mission worth fighting for.
