Francis Crick Institute
Principal Laboratory Research Scientist – Sateriale LabReporting to: Adam Sateriale, Group LeaderContract term: This is a full-time, fixed term (2-years) position on Crick terms and conditions of employment. The Research GroupDr Sateriale’s group was established at the Francis Crick in 2020, with the expressed goal of understanding the molecular mechanisms that govern infection and immunity for apicomplexan parasites, a group of pathogens that are represent a significant burden on public health. The Plasmodium parasite is the causal agent of malaria, one of the major causes of global morbidity and mortality. The related Cryptosporidium parasite is the causal agent of cryptosporidiosis, a common diarrhoeal disease that can be life threatening in children and immunocompromised patients. In the lab, we use a variety of in vitro and in vivo models to mimic human infection, with the goal of broadening the foundation of knowledge that can be leveraged to develop new interventions. Common techniques used in the lab include: genetic engineering, flow cytometry, expansion and super-resolution microscopy, immunofluorescence and immunoprecipitation, high-throughput screening and sequencing. The RoleThis role forms an important position in the EPSRC funded Prosperity Partnership with GSK, an academic/industry strategic partnership which is aiming to develop systems chemical biology approaches to identify chemical tools to dissect biological pathways and identify potentially tractable therapeutic targets in a range of disease setting including malaria and cryptosporidiosis. As such, the position will involve working with scientists from both GSK and Dr Adam Sateriale’s group at the Francis Crick Institute.Responsibilities for this role include:Independently leading multiple research projects, designing, and executing experiments with strategic direction from the group leader.Presenting results group meetings, journal clubs, seminars, and scientific meetings.Writing up findings for publication and completing revisions.Organisation and management of the laboratory, including maintaining laboratory databases, ordering of laboratory supplies, monitoring budgets, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.Training and supervising other lab members in key techniques and protocols, lab operations, and equipment use.Liaising with Science Operations and attending key quadrant meetings.Writing risk assessments and SOPs and providing safety guidance to lab members.Collaborating and assisting other lab members with research projects.Independently managing long-term investigations and collaborations with other researchers.Providing technical expertise for the development, refinement and troubleshooting of relevant methodologies.Experience and CompetenciesThe post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values:Bold; Open; CollegialEssentialPhD or equivalent degree in relevant area of study and a minimum of 5 yrs experience in a parasitology laboratory.Ability to culture and maintain malaria parasites, with experience working at high levels of biological safety.Ability to independently lead an exploratory research drug discovery project – identifying lead candidates and their targets, as well as formulating and testing mode-of-actions studies.Ability to liaise between multiple research groups, communicating findings in a straightforward manner to a broad audience.Ability to train and support junior researchers to promote successful project outcomes and career development.About UsAt the Crick, we conduct research at the forefront of biomedical research. We combine rigour with an open and collaborative culture, and are outward-looking, reflecting our status as a partnership of six organisations aiming to pool knowledge, ideas and resources. We have a wide research portfolio with no divisions or departments, bringing biomedical researchers together with clinicians, physical scientists and applied scientists from our pharmaceutical partners. We aim to attract the most talented researchers and support them to tackle innovative research questions. Our science technology platforms provide our researchers with access to state-of-the-art technology and expertise. We provide an excellent learning environment with dedicated education programmes in public engagement with science, education and personal development, and a postdoc training programme that prepares scientists for leadership roles in science. If you are interested in applying for this role, please apply via our .All offers of employment are subject to successful security screening and continuous eligibility to work in the United Kingdom. If you require a visa to work in the UK we will help support your application should you be successfulEquality, Diversity & InclusionWe welcome applications from all backgrounds.
