Job Description:Grade UE09 £61,198-£75,498Deanery of Clinical SciencesFull-time: 35 hours per weekFixed-term: 5 years (September 2030)The Opportunity:Provide specialist scientific support for clinical and research PET services at the Edinburgh Imaging Facility based in QMRI undertaking the statutory duties of a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in accordance with the requirements of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (2017). The post will support Scotland’s only Total Body PET and PETMRI scanners.This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and for up to five years (to 30 September 2030).Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Honours degree in physical science and MSc in Medical Physics.
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist (Medical Physicist), MPE accreditation or route to become MPE certified
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge across the full range of working procedures and practices in the field of PET
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge and practical experience of the principles of the operation of PET scanners and associated equipment
  • Highly developed IT skills including programming and system modification skills in nuclear medicine computer systems and image processing packages

Between now and 2030 we will do that with a values-led approach to teaching, research and innovation, and through the strength of our relationships, both locally and globally.About the Team:Edinburgh Imaging is unique in the UK in terms of size, scope, co-location and integration of academic research scanning facilities and equipment, supporting laboratories and activities, academic, clinical, technical, image analysis, data management and professional services expertise, integration with NHS Lothian clinical diagnostic services, access to patient groups, data archives, and embedded online and campus teaching activities.Edinburgh Imaging hosts three research-dedicated magnetic resonance (MR) scanners, two positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PETCT) scanners, and a positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance (PETMR) scanner alongside an advanced radiochemistry facility. The latter includes a cyclotron with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) licensed production facilities, and research and development laboratories. There are extensive image analysis facilities plus growing activity in retinal and optical imaging. All activity is underpinned by an integrated data management platform. This represents circa £40M capital investment in imaging equipment over the last 10 years, and an annual turnover of nearly £4M. Edinburgh imaging depends upon a foundation of a large and specialized work force. This is a diverse group of experts drawn from many disciplines: physicists, radiographers, radiochemists, data managers, programmers, business developers, technical experts, technicians, governance staff, marketing and administration. Many roles depend on advanced academic expertise and the group delivers “own” academic outputs as well as providing guidance and support for non-imagers using imaging in their academic work.
