About usThe Ear InstituteThe Ear Institute (EI) in the Faculty of Brain Sciences at University College London (UCL) is a multi-disciplinary state-of-the-art research institute dedicated to understanding hearing and solving hearing problems. The EI has circa 75 staff collaborating across diverse scientific specialties including genetics, cellular and developmental biology, auditory neuroscience, neuro-engineering and human perception. Our staff also collaborate with partners in other UCL departments, centres and institutes, and across the world, ensuring that scientific research at the EI remains at the cutting edge.Together with its partner, the Royal National Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital, the EI is also a major national and international centre for translational and clinical research. The Ear Institute hosts a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Theme in ‘Hearing Health’ (https://www.uclhospitals.brc.nihr.ac.uk/our-research/hearing-health) and the NIHR centre ‘evidENT’ for evidence-based medicine and clinical trials related to Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) medicine (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ear/evident). A RAND analysis of highly cited publications ranked UCL No.1 in England for both ‘Deafness and Hearing’ and for ‘Audiology and Speech & Language Pathology’.Training the next generation of auditory scientists is a priority at the Ear Institute. The EI hosts three- and four-year PhD programmes in a wide range of basic and clinical disciplines, including genetics, cell and molecular biology, auditory neuroscience and human auditory function. It also offers a range of Master’s-level programmes in audiology, audiovestibular research, and sensory systems research, as well as short courses for students and health-care professionals. An undergraduate BSc in Audiology was launched in 2022/23. Audiology teaching is delivered in close collaboration with the Royal National Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital.The Royal National Ear, Nose and Throat HospitalThe Royal National Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital (RNENTH) is a specialist hospital within the University College London Hospitals (UCLH) Foundation Trust and is part of the Royal National Ear, Nose & Throat and Eastman Dental Hospital (RNENTEDH) division of UCLH.With over 140 years of history as a specialist hospital, the RNENTH is the largest Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) hospital in the UK and Europe’s largest centre for audiovestibular medicine and research. It is recognised internationally as a centre of excellence, unique in its breadth of knowledge and specialties. ENT is one of 11 of UCL Partners’ clinical programmes.The RNENTH manages all aspects of ENT from minor procedures such as putting in grommets to major complex head and neck surgery. The ENT out-patient department provides both routine and specialist clinics including some nurse-led clinics. Last year, the RNENTH treated more than 60,000 patients, 25% of which were patients referred from all over the UK and abroad. The RNENT Hospital provides tertiary referral for rhinology/facial plastics, otology, skull base surgery, cochlear implantation, and paediatric services and adult airway reconstruction. It also provides general secondary level ENT services to the Whittington Hospital and Edgware Community Hospital, and community outpatient care for Enfield.About the roleResearchThe post holder will be responsible for defining and leading the Institute’s research strategy in complex otology and ensuring that it remains internationally competitive.In addition, the post holder will be expected to:

  • Lead a programme relevant to basic, translational, and clinical aspects of complex otology.
  • Build collaborations and robust channels of communications with the basic scientists and audiological clinical teaching staff at the Ear Institute, or other relevant UCL Departments.
  • Maintain continuous external funding for research and drive the development of multi-disciplinary collaborative bids.
  • Be recognized as a leader in the field internationally through, for example, highly-cited publications or membership of esteemed bodies. Office, laboratory and bench space, including common laboratory facilities, are available with flexibility to meet the needs of the appointee.

TeachingThe post holder will:

  • Provide outstanding clinical training and education to students and junior colleagues and contribute to developing new courses in areas of clinical or research specialty.
  • Contribute to the Ear Institute’s educational activities through delivering appropriate taught modules, postgraduate student supervision, and lead on developing CPD courses to be delivered in collaboration with the Ear Institute and which are relevant to the post holder’s clinical specialism.
  • Become involved in medical student teaching as well as teaching on audiology programmes at the Ear Institute.
  • Contribute to local, national and international graduate and post-graduate teaching courses and symposia.

Leadership and Strategic DevelopmentThe post holder will have a strong track record in senior academic leadership and strategic planning. There is an expectation that the post holder will develop a clear academic strategy not only in relation to their personal research but across UCL and London academic surgery. It is expected that the post holder will contribute to the institutional life of the Ear Institute and the Royal National Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital especially through leadership of initiatives to increase collaboration between basic scientists and clinicians. The post holder is also expected to contribute to external engagement, for example through collaborations with industrial partners or policy makers that help to improve treatment of otological disorders.ClinicalThe post holder will:

  • Deliver high-quality patient care and contribute to development of innovative service models.
  • Undertake clinical duties as agreed with the Divisional Clinical Director.
  • Integrate with, complement and support the existing clinical team in the Otology and Auditory Implants department.

This appointment is subject toAbout youThe UCL Ear Institute together with University College London Hospitals is seeking to appoint a 5 PA Chair (or Associate Professor with future opportunity for promotion to Chair) in Otology at UCL and 5 PA Consultant ENT Surgeon for Otology and Auditory Implantation. The appointee must have a commitment to transformative clinical research, high quality patient care, innovative service models, delivery of performance targets, and excellence in education/training.This post is to expand clinical research at the UCL Ear Institute and University College London Hospitals, to build collaborations between clinicians and basic scientists at UCL/UCLH, and to maintain and develop the existing unique tertiary service at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital (RNTNEH).The appointee should have a track record of high-quality research outputs related to otology and/or auditory implants. The appointee should also be experienced in medical and surgical management of routine and complex otology and auditory implants and able to integrate with and complement existing service provision. The appointee will join the RNTNEH Multi-disciplinary Otology and Auditory Implant team and will be expected to further develop the service.Experience of the wide variety of auditory implants offered at the RNENTH is essential.
