The successful applicant will be a senior academic with research and education expertise in a domain that complements research priorities and strengths in the CHBH and the School of Psychology. They will be recognised internationally for the quality and impact of their research and will have an outstanding track record of grant capture and experience of managing large awards to completion. They will add value through collaborative interdisciplinary research across as well as outside of the University of Birmingham.We wish to attract a scientist with research and research leadership expertise which aligns with one or several of the key research themes at the CHBH (https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/centre-for-human-brain-health):

  • Cognitive Computational Neuroscience
  • Social Interaction and Communication
  • Learning, Memory and Performance
  • Awareness, Consciousness and Sleep
  • Neuroimaging Methods and AI

We would be particularly keen to hear from applicants with expertise and a track record of using and developing MEG/OPM, and those for whom MEG/OPM forms a substantial part of their research programme. However, we would also welcome applications from individuals working in other research areas that complement or expand the scope of the centre.The CHBH is a research-dedicated, custom-built neuroscience facility which opened in 2019 and has established an international reputation for research and education in cognitive and translational neuroscience, attracting over £64 million in grants since its foundation. The CHBH houses world-class research facilities, including 3T MRI, MEG, OPM, EEG, fNIRS, TMS, FUS and Sleep labs, supported by high-performance computing at the University of Birmingham. The Centre has a vibrant interdisciplinary userbase stretching across the University of Birmingham and local hospitals, and is supported by a dedicated team of technical and operational staff.The CHBH is ideally located on the University’s Edgbaston campus, allowing us to conduct interdisciplinary research for academics (internal and external), students, clinicians, and industry researchers. We would welcome applications from colleagues whose research plans would further develop our connections with the Schools of Computer Science, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, the Medical School, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and the Barberry National Centre for Mental Health.Post-holders will have an appetite and aptitude for academic leadership and a significant track record of achievement. Experience leading and /or developing centres and multidisciplinary teams is desirable. The post-holder will be at a level where they will be able to take on substantial responsibilities for leadership of the CHBH.Main DutiesEnhance world-leading activity in brain health research and teaching.Contribute to or step into a senior academic leadership capacity in the CHBH, such as a centre directorship or co-directorship.ResearchTo pursue sustained research activity through original research and scholarship, including other research-related contributions through conference papers and presentations and/or consultancy projects and advice, including (as appropriate):

  • contributing to the management of research activities and/or supervising other research staff;
  • leading successful funding bids, including Doctoral Training programme and consortia bids involving the CHBH;
  • consistently publishing internationally excellent research, with some research regarded as world leading, that results in a sustained, highly respected reputation of international quality;
  • supervising and examining PhD students, both within the institution and externally;
  • providing expert advice internally and externally;
  • peer reviewing articles for peer reviewed academic journals and grant applications by research councils and/or other major funding bodies;
  • leading sustained impact activity including public engagement and makes a significant contribution to policy development at a national and international level;
  • supervising and examine PhD students, both within the institution and externally;
  • as appropriate, managing research activities and/or supervising other research staff;
  • developing novel methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research being pursued.

Management/AdministrationLead activities in the Centre/ School and represent the School on College/University committees or working groups. Where appropriate to the discipline, this is likely to include some but not all of the responsibilities listed below:

  • making an important contribution to the development and running of the Centre or School, for example, leading activity on research and/or teaching assessment;
  • leading successful international engagement at School or College level;
  • developing and managing staff and resources in support of major research and/or teaching activities;
  • making important contributions to the development of the Centre’s research and learning and teaching strategy;
  • contributing significantly to the development and delivery of knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement and public engagement activities with sustained high value impact of manifest benefit to the College and the University;
  • promoting a culture (including policies and procedures) that embeds equality and values diversity and inclusion;
  • leading, serving on and assisting the work of committees and task and finish groups beyond School/Centre, e.g., Senate, Council, University Education or Research Committee etc.;
  • leading external committees, e.g., those associated with public/professional bodies or delivery of activities for an external body at an appropriate level, e.g., chairing sub committees associated with large elements of work;
  • leading/project managing a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. a new research initiative, or a recruitment drive);
  • making a sustained contribution to widening participation, schools outreach and/or public understanding of the discipline;
  • contributing to administrative activities within the University (e.g., appeals panels, working groups).

EducationYou will contribute across the range of teaching and learning activities:

  • undertaking own teaching, which will include teaching and examining courses at different levels, planning and reviewing own teaching approaches, developing programme proposals, supervision, marking and examining. You will ensure that your teaching practice is informed by discipline-based research, through participating in the research culture of the School.
  • playing an important and sustained role in the recruitment and admission of students;
  • co-supervising doctoral students to completion;
  • leading the development of teaching, learning and assessment policies and strategies;
  • acting as an education mentor to colleagues in the School/Institute/College or more widely;
  • leading on curriculum design at module and programme level to ensure it is contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging;
  • actively engaging students in curriculum design and sharing evidence of “what works”;
  • developing an external profile evidenced through engaging in external quality assurance activities related to teaching, e.g. external examining and engaging with/supporting education in other institutions;

Citizenship

  • taking collective ownership of challenges faced by the School or College and working with colleagues to develop solutions;
  • mentoring and coaching of colleagues, particularly those in the early stages of their careers.

Person Specification or Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • A higher degree relevant to the research/teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
  • Demonstrated excellence in Research, Learning and Teaching and Management and Administration.
