For any informal queries, please email Professor Miriam Gifford (Head of School) atWe are seeking to appoint a Professor in Environmental Microbiology to undertake high-impact research and teaching.The ideal candidate will complement our existing research strengths in nitrogen and trace gas cycling processes, which link microbial physiology to global environmental cycles, assess the role of microorganisms in cycling of nitrogen in the environment, and develop experimental, field and/or quantitative approaches to study globally significant biogeochemical processes applied to cultivated natural and managed systems.The successful candidate must be an internationally recognised and active researcher, with a strong track record of attracting funding and an extensive portfolio of excellent publications.About YouThe successful candidate will use a wide spectrum of approaches including cultivation of ammonia-oxidizing archaea, studies of their physiology in relation to N- and trace gas-cycling processes, microbial cell biology, biochemistry and/or genetics.They will be able to translate findings from experimental work in cultivated isolates to cultivation-independent, process focused, bioinformatics-supported, meta-omics approaches to unravel the drivers of globally significant N-cycle transformations in aquatic, or terrestrial ecosystems.They will have the opportunity to collaborate with staff across the spectrum of research at Warwick and in particular with the Environment and Ecology Research Cluster ( ), Quantitative, System, and Engineering Biology Research Cluster ( ), and the Plant & Agricultural Biosciences Cluster ( ) fostering a dynamic research environment.For further information regarding the skills required for this role please see the personal specification section of the attached job description.RIGHT TO WORK IN THE UK: If you do not yet have the right to work in the UK and/or are seeking sponsorship for a Skilled Worker visa in the UK points-based immigration system please click on this link which contains further information about obtaining right to work in the UK and details about eligibility for sponsorship for a Skilled Worker Visa.For those eligible, the University of Warwick offers relocation and Immigration Support Scheme packages to assist with costs of relocating and any associated visa applications and Immigration Health surcharge (IHS) fees.About the DepartmentThe School of Life Sciences has significant research activity in ecology and environmental biosciences, with particular strengths in microbial ecology, disease ecology, microbial metabolism, environmental antimicrobial resistance, bioprocessing and food security, as well as cutting-edge research on engineered microbial ecosystems as part of one of the UK’s six funded Synthetic Biology centres.Our research covers natural and managed ecosystems (marine, freshwater, soils, animal, plant and crop systems) and applies state-of-the-art quantitative, experimental, ‘omics, and palaeobiology approaches. Our research is highly interdisciplinary, across a wide range of taxa and from molecular through cellular to the organism and population.Research is supported by cutting-edge computational and experimental facilities (agricultural, genomics, proteomics, biomedical services and imaging) and cross- disciplinary research centres (WESIC, WISB, SBIDER, WAMIC). We benefit from a steady influx of PhD students through several large Doctoral Training Centres including CENTA 2 (NERC) and MIBTP (BBSRC).We deliver high quality teaching using a blend of traditional and innovative teaching methods, and consistently achieve high scores in the National Student Satisfaction survey.
