Position description

Air University’s Air War College seeks qualified applicants for a faculty role as Professor (Asst/Assoc/Full) of International Security Studies. This position involves educating military and civilian Senior Developmental Education students by developing curriculum, teaching, and researching great power competition, national security decision making, and the international security environment.

The primary focus of this position is teaching and curriculum development in core and elective program courses related to areas of great power competition, national security decision making and the international security environment. Teaching duties include delivering department-developed instructional materials and guiding/facilitating student centered discussions in a seminar environment of 12-14 students. Plans and produces curriculum under PME/AU/AWC/Departmental guidance for core and elective courses including content instructional methods/materials, and testing/evaluation instruments. Makes recommendations on educational methods, program content, course organization, lesson development, lecture topics, lecturers, integration of state-of-the-art instructional technology applications, and other areas of curriculum development. Provides detailed feedback to students and documentation of student progress. Serves as subject matter expert and advisor to AWC and AU on subjects of relevance to professional or academic background and teaching areas.

Engages in professional research and writing in areas of expertise. Actively seeks publication of book manuscripts as well as scholarly works such as articles, monographs, and book reviews for publication in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, professional journals, and other outlets. Presents results of research at appropriate conferences and symposia. Supervises and advises student research in course work, research projects, and professional studies papers.

Serves in faculty positions supporting personnel and programs as determined by Department Chair, Dean of Academic Affairs (AWC/DE) or AWC Commandant (AWC/CC). Participates with other professional military education schools, professional organizations, AF/DoD institutions, universities and colleges for professional development. Delivers lectures, conducts seminars, participates in panel discussions related to AWC curriculum and in area of expertise at various institutions such as other professional military education schools, civilian institutions. Participates in professional associations and consistently ensures academic support to all AU organizations for relevant conferences and other events sponsored by these organizations

  • A secret security is required
  • You may qualify for moving expenses, if authorized, it may be covered using PCS, Recruitment or Relocation Incentive in accordance with agency policy.
  • This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.
  • Incumbent may be required to travel by commercial or military conveyance to perform temporary duty.

Qualifications

The senior nature of the AWC program, incumbent may be required to teach within other areas of the school’s curriculum.

  • Broad knowledge of the subject matter that comprises the AWC curriculum and deep knowledge of the curriculum related to operational planning and warfighting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with graduate-level faculty and exercise peer leadership in working with senior and mid-level college leadership in the development of senior leader development programs.
  • Teaching experience at the graduate level, including the ability to develop curriculum and present the material at the graduate level.
  • Ability to conduct original research.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a wide range of diverse people and groups.

Education

A Ph.D. is required in a desired field pertinent to the curriculum related to International Relations, Political Science, National Security Affairs, Government, Political Economy or related fields or with regional expertise.
