Job Description:Position DetailsSchool of Engineering, College of Engineering and Physical SciencesLocation: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UKCompetitive salary for an outstanding candidateProfessorial PostFull time, PermanentClosing date: 12th June 2024Role SummaryWe are seeking an outstanding candidate who will provide significant strategic leadership which will positively enhance the profile of the institution. The post holder will be expected to have an excellent international reputation profile, based on an extensive track record of delivery in enterprise, engagement and impact which has a major quantifiable influence in the disciplinary area. The post holder will also make a significant contribution to teaching and learning, contribute at a high level to leadership and management activity and act as a role model in respect of citizenship.Main dutiesEnterprise, Engagement and Impact (EEI)

  • Working collaboratively with national and international partners, making a major contribution to the delivery of demonstrable societal, economic and University benefit from academic and applied research;
  • Initiating and leading significant activities which contribute to widening participation, student engagement, outreach or public engagement activities at scale which enhance public understanding of, and engagement with research and/or teaching, or that contributes to well-informed public debate;
  • Demonstrating a major influence with industry, business or public bodies in advancing original ideas and principles into products methods or policies;
  • Leading on the development of strategies, policies and procedures which have an impact on equality, diversity and inclusion;
  • Provide high level consultancy or professional advice to industry, or to policy think-tanks or similar organisations;
  • Lead institutional or nationally significant and high-level knowledge transfer activities in partnership with industry, government or NGOs; this could be in the form of contract research, consultancy and/or collaboration;
  • Leading the development and delivery of innovative CPD/training/consultancy activities at scale;
  • Leading successful commercialisation of patents, inventions and other exploitable intellectual property;
  • Extensive leadership of enterprise and/or external engagement activities with outstanding financial and non-financial institutional benefit;
  • Activity which demonstrates substantial economic benefit through commercialisation activity (e.g., significant number of jobs created in spin-out company);
  • Significant record of translation of research findings into professional/clinical solutions;
  • Applying clinical knowledge to improve human care and professional standards (e.g., development of new services, or innovative approaches to patient care).

Education

  • Develop, plan and lead high quality education activities;
  • Develop high quality, inclusive and academically challenging practice in research-intensive teaching, learning and assessment;
  • Deliver a high quality portfolio of innovative, engaging and inspirational teaching which is accessible to all;
  • Contribute to curriculum design to ensure the offer is contemporary, inclusive, engaging, international and academically challenging;
  • Lead/manage innovative approaches to digital resources/environments and support colleagues to use them in the delivery of teaching, learning and assessment;
  • Provide outstanding project/dissertation supervision;
  • Develop and lead collaborative working arrangements with colleagues across the Department, School and wider University to deliver outstanding teaching.

Leadership, Management and Citizenship

  • Leading and managing major activities in the School/College/University. This may be in relation to one or more of the following:
  • external partnership activities/collaborations;
  • leading a Department or undertaking School/College roles;
  • developing institutional policies and practice;
  • leading activities contributing to a positive and inclusive community spirit across the School/College/University;
  • using position and influence in order to ensure that others engage positively with the University’s Strategy;
  • leading, developing and motivating colleagues using mentoring and coaching skills;
  • proactively supporting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion activities.

Person SpecificationThe post holder will have an outstanding and sustained profile of achievement evidenced by the following:

  • PhD or equivalent qualification or an equivalent body of work;
  • A substantial record of enterprise, engagement and impact outputs;
  • An excellent and widely recognised reputation amongst peers nationally;
  • Proven ability to plan and lead the delivery of EEI activities;
  • A sustained record of attracting funding for EEI activities, as appropriate to the discipline;
  • A track record in translating research into impact on other scholars and on the wider community through publication, engagement with policy and practice, consultancy and advisory work;
  • Transferable skills which can be used to develop and lead the delivery of innovative research-led teaching, learning and assessment;
  • Transferable skills which can be used to lead curriculum design and implementation;
  • Willingness to engage in teaching-related CPD;
  • Evidence of innovative approaches to digital resources/environments;
  • Evidence of high level leadership and management contributions;
  • Evidence of high level successful collaborations;
  • Evidence of proactively engaging in citizenship activities;
  • Evidence of working with others for the greater good of the academic discipline and institution.
