Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold a full-time, tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Professor at UBC. Both external and internal to UBC candidates will be considered. A faculty appointment at UBC is subject to university approvals and will be contingent upon Innovate BC approving the candidate as the holder of the John and Penny Ryan LEEF Chair in Spinal Cord Research.This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.ICORD is a world-leading health research centre focused on spinal cord injury. From the laboratory-based cellular level of understanding injury to rehabilitation and recovery, our researchers are dedicated to the development and translation of more effective strategies to promote prevention, functional recovery, and improved quality of life after spinal cord injury. Located at the Vancouver General Hospital campus in the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, ICORD is supported by UBC Faculty of Medicine and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.This prestigious appointment, supported by the Leading-Edge Endowment Fund (LEEF) through Innovate BC, will provide a unique opportunity for an internationally recognized individual to perform research in an outstanding and inclusive environment to enhance the province of BC as a leader in spinal cord injury research. The successful applicant will conduct innovative research that will support and link researchers regionally, across Canada and around the world, encouraging scientists and clinical investigators to work collaboratively on relevant research to provide faster and more accurate translation of discoveries into valid therapeutic interventions, bio-technical devices, surgical practices and rehabilitation therapies. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the teaching activities of their home Department, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners. The incumbent will also be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community. The successful candidate will contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity. The successful candidate will have an outstanding track record of excellence and leadership in research related to spinal cord injury. The successful candidate, if an MD or MD/PhD, must be eligible for registration by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia for subsequent arrangements to practice their specialty of medicine.An appropriate academic Department in the UBC Faculty of Medicine will be identified at the time a successful candidate is selected contingent upon the candidate’s area of expertise.
