The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations System’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. This position is located in the UNEP/Industry and Economy Division, Chemicals and Health Branch, Pollution and Health Unit, Nairobi duty station. Under the overall guidance of the Unit Head and direct supervision of the Air Quality Coordinator, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to and facilitate cooperation under the Global Air Quality Cooperation Network established as part of UNEA Resolution 6/10, including through organization of meetings and facilitation of information and knowledge exchange;
  • Facilitate coordination with and participation of air quality regional and sub-regional cooperation entities as part of the global network;
  • Manage projects and related funds including through monitoring and reporting and develop fundraising proposals addressing air pollution;
  • Provide advisory services to member states, including at sub-national levels, and facilitate multisectoral efforts, to improve air quality management capacities and address key air pollution sources;
  • Provide technical support to and promote engagement of private sector actors from key high-impact sectors including industry, agriculture and waste in combatting air pollution and promoting air quality;
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting;
  • Performs other duties as may be required.

Education

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in environmental or physical sciences, engineering, chemistry, or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Job – Specific Qualification

  • Certification in Project Management such as Prince2 or similar is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in air pollution prevention and control programmes is required. At least three years of experience in working with governments at the national and international levels is required. Experience with partnership development and with private sector is desirable. A minimum of two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable. NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four areas.
