The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The position will support UNEP’s work in relation to the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) Accelerator Partnership Programme. The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is a country-led global initiative to strengthen National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) i.e. ensuring alignment with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) and increase their uptake at the national level to catalyse accelerated action. This initiative is bringing together governments, international and regional organizations and other relevant stakeholders to support the development and implementation of ambitious NBSAPs that drive the transformative change needed to collectively achieve the goals and targets of the KMGBF and, ultimately, the global vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050. This post is located in the Ecosystems Division, Biodiversity & Land Management Branch at the Nairobi duty station. The incumbent will report to the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership Coordinator .Under the overall guidance of the Head of Unit and the direct supervision of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership Coordinator, the incumbent will undertake the following duties:
Responsibilities
• Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions. • Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change. • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources. • Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies. • Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems / issues and prepares conclusions. • Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc. • Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc. • Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities. • Participates in or lead field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc. • Coordinates activities related to budget and funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.). • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental science or management, biodiversity conservation, sustainable development or related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management delivering sustainable development and/or biodiversity conservation in developing countries is required. Experience in programme management within the UN or similar large institution is desirable. Experience working with and coordinating with diverse teams in multiple countries and contexts is required. Experience in supporting countries to meet their obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity and/or other biodiversity related Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) is desirable. Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four area.

Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
