The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for ‘sustainable development’. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by UN Environment. This post is located in the Convention on Biological Diversity, Scientific, Society and Sustainable Futures (SSSF) Division, at the Montreal duty station. Under the overall guidance of the Head of the SSSF Division and the direct supervision of the Head of the Biodiversity Science, Policy and Governance (BSPG) and the Programme Management Officer for Marine, Coastal and Island Biodiversity, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
Responsibilities
- Supports implementation of work under the Convention with respect to protected and conserved areas including, (a) developing concept notes and proposals for donor support; (b) planning and execution of workplans and budgets.
- Supports capacity building activities and partnerships relating to protected and conserved areas, including by catalyzing and facilitating development and application of common and integrated gender-sensitive tools, methodologies, and approaches.
- Liaises with relevant UN/International organizations/agreements/processes to enhance synergies and ensures coherent approaches, in particular the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention), the Convention on Migratory Species, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and regional intergovernmental organizations, as well as other relevant bodies and organizations to enhance collaboration and synergies related to protected and conserved areas.
- Provides scientific, technical, and organizational support to the work of the Secretariat relating to Target 3 through, inter alia, preparation of substantive inputs to meetings of the Conference of the Parties and its subsidiary bodies. This includes preparation of notifications, review, compilation and analysis of information, organization of expert meetings, preparations of meeting documents for their consideration, servicing these meetings and following up on relevant recommendations and decisions.
- Promotes the work of Target 3, externally. This includes preparation of communication and outreach materials. Disseminates the materials online, in meetings and events, and through various social media channels. Keeps the website under review and up to date.
- Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting
- Performs other relevant duties as required.

Education
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental science environmental policy, environmental law management, biodiversity conservation management, or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
Work Experience
- A minimum of 5 years of working experience in the field of programme management, project management, environmental science, assessment and related research, development, biodiversity related research is required Experience with the United Nations, International Organizations, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, in particular Target 3 is desirable. Experience with the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, in particular Aichi Target 11 activities, is desirable. Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable. NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four areas.
