Project management Intern

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is an operational arm of the United Nations, supporting the successful implementation of its partners’ peacebuilding, humanitarian and development projects around the world. UNOPS supports partners to build a better future by providing services that increase the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of peace building, humanitarian and development projects.  Mandated as a central resource of the United Nations, UNOPS provides sustainable project management, procurement and infrastructure services to a wide range of governments, donors and United Nations organizations.

New York Portfolios Office (NYPO) supports the United Nations Secretariat, as well as other New York-based United Nations organizations, bilateral and multilateral partners in the delivery of UNOPS mandate in project management, infrastructure management, and procurement management.

  • Sustainable Development Cluster (SDC) supports diverse partners with their peacebuilding, humanitarian
  • and development operations. It was formed by combining the following portfolios: Grants Management
  • Services (GMS), UN Technology Support Services (UNTSS), Development and Special Initiatives Portfolio (DSIP) It provides Services to partners’ programmes that are designed, structured, and managed with a global perspective and primarily serving partners that are headquartered in New York. The SDC has a footprint of approximately 125 countries.
  • The Project Management Intern is part of the Sustainable Development Cluster (SDC) under the New York Portfolios Office (NYPO) SDC through its Development and Special Initiatives Portfolio (DSIP) supporting various projects in partnership with UNOCT.
  • The incumbent of this position will be personnel of UNOPS under its full administrative and financial responsibility.

Functional Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the project management intern will  be responsible for the following specific tasks:
  • Provide support to the implementation of the projects activities;
  • Assist and provide administrative and substantive support in the organization of events, meetings, conferences etc.;
  • Support in conducting research and collecting data as requested;
  • Interact with colleagues, clients and partners to exchange information on administrative issues and seek cooperation.
  • Resolution of routine administrative and process problems, referring complex issues to supervisor with recommendations for course of action;
  • Create Requisitions and Purchase Orders (POs); performance of reconciliation activities such as closure and cancellation POs. Inquiries on PO details and activities. Generation of PO reports for expedition, status and details information; and create receipts including information such as distributions, rejections and cancellations;
  • Create vendor details and approval follow-ups;
  • Monitoring of payments and follow up when problems arise; Review of payment vouchers and supporting documentation for completeness, accuracy, compliance with UNOPS FRRs and correctness of account code charges;
  • Process travel and expenses according to established procedures and practice;
  • Ensure full compliance of operations with UNOPS rules, regulations, policies and strategies;
  • Collaborate with  the Project Manager and the Programme team in any other matter as required.
  • Monitoring and Progress Controls
  • Satisfactory delivery of project-related tasks within predetermined deadlines;
  • Meet projected outputs as outlined by the supervisor;
  • Regular meetings with supervisor to ensure timely completion of assignments.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a university programme such as Bachelor, Masters or Ph.D. (or the equivalent) or have graduated from such studies within three (3) years prior to the application date of the internship.

Experience:

  • Legal permit or student visa to work in New York is required
  • Any prior work experience is not required.
  • Any previous experience in international development would be an asset.

Language: 

  • Fluency in English (write, read, talk) is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
