The mandate of the CCWJ is to ensure the competitiveness of the Canadian welding industry by supplying today’s technology needs and preparing for tomorrow’s needs. This is accomplished by educating current and future leaders from industry, maintaining a worldwide network of partnerships, performing world leading research, and sharing the findings with the scientific community.PositionThe project manager will interact with key stakeholders from industry, government, academic collaborators, and talented students and postdoctoral Fellows. The project manager will collaborate with the Director of the Canadian Centre for Welding and Joining on a daily basis. This position grants a high level of independence and encourages proactive decision-making, with the potential to make a meaningful impact on society.DutiesSafety and Compliance Management

  • Ensure compliance and reporting associated with safety protocols in CCWJ-related labs.
  • Serve as the Lab Safety Associate for CCWJ labs.

Grant and Financial Administration

  • Coordinate with the research administrator the administration of large grants and research projects.
  • Formalize grants post-technical agreement with sponsors, ensuring alignment with established guidelines.
  • Monitor, analyse, forecast, and report the finances of the centre.
  • Works collaboratively with the research administrator and finance partners on financial matters

Industry Partnerships and Resource Management

  • Coordinate centre activities with industry partners.
  • Seek new partners to secure large projects and endowments to grow the centre.
  • Coordinate administrative aspects of purchases large items for CCWJ.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Prepare and organize reporting documents for the Annual Industrial Advisory Board meeting.
  • Apprise the CCWJ Director and Research Administrator on budget-related matters, including the original budget, current spending rate, remaining budget, and eligibility of allocation of expenses for different accounts.
  • Manage budget between $500K and $1.5M.
  • Keep track of anticipated deadlines for academic and administrative tasks.

Communication, Outreach, and Information Management

  • Assist the CCWJ Director in facilitating communication and collaboration with sponsors, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Support the CCWJ Director in coordinating interactions with various administrative units within the University of Alberta.
  • Coordinate outreach activities such as presentations for industry and the annual seminar.
  • Collaborate with the Research Administrator to manage the curation of CCWJ information in CCWJ system (currently in Google Suites) ensuring systematic retrieval of selected information such as current CCWJ members, current projects, people and companies attending CCWJ activities, publication tracking, etc.
  • Serve as a communications liaison for both internal and external communications, including updating research proposals, communicating with external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required, with a preference for candidates who have a background in business or technical fields.
  • Two to four years of hands-on experience overseeing complex projects and programs. A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing budgets and applying basic accounting practices.
  • Proficiency in utilizing Google Suites and other commonly used computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact professionally with C-level executives and representatives from the governments of Alberta, Canada, and other countries.
  • Proficiency in understanding the administrative aspects of technological projects involving a diverse array of stakeholders, encompassing companies, government entities, academic institutions, and students.
  • Capability to quickly adapt and learn new software, including University of Alberta-specific internal management tools like PeopleSoft (HCM and Financials) and the University of Alberta grant software reporting program (eTRAC).
  • Preferred experience using PeopleSoft (HCM and Financials).
