This position is situated in the Earth Observation & Spatial Ecology Laboratory (the Laboratory) in the Department of Earth, Environmental & Geographic Sciences, with a main objective to assist Dr. Mathieu Bourbonnais, Principal Investigator (PI) in planning, coordinating and implementing research projects and funding applications related to the Laboratory, the Centre for Wildfire Coexistence, and the Centre for Climate Resilience.Dr. Bourbonnais and his team’s research lies at the intersection between remote sensing and ecology including developing approaches to understand changing ecosystems. In addition, Dr. Bourbonnais is Co-Director of the Centre for Wildfire Coexistence, a dual-campus and interdisciplinary initiative that harnesses the expertise in both campuses of UBC and beyond, to advance wildfire science toward proactive and sustainable solutions for resilient communities and ecosystems.This position has a multifaceted research administrative and support role. Key responsibilities include assisting Dr. Bourbonnais in executing research strategies, applying for research funding, building partnerships, and working with members of the Laboratory to coordinate and implement projects.Organizational Status
This position reports to Dr. Mathieu Bourbonnais (PI) and to to Sandra Spencer, Vice Principal Research Office, and works in the Earth Observation & Spatial Ecology Laboratory (the Laboratory) in the Department of Earth, Environmental & Geographic Sciences at UBC’s Okanagan campus.Work Performed

  • Provides support for all aspects of research project management, including developing strategic plans;
  • Oversees activities related to research projects and knowledge extension/translation of the research outcomes, including establishing priorities for multi-phase projects, coordinating/facilitating activities involving multiple members of the Laboratory and/or third parties, and timely notifying the PI and relevant team members of issues/problems;
  • Facilitating grant applications (including grant writing and submission) that advance the research objectives of the PI and UBC Okanagan.
  • Leading data collection/management and reporting efforts (including report writing and editing) related to the PI’s research activities;
  • Arranging logistical matters related to research and knowledge extension activities of the Laboratory including meetings, workshops, and field trips;
  • Performing other duties related to research activities in the Laboratory as required.

Consequence of Error/JudgementErrors or incorrect decisions of the Project Manager could seriously compromise the timing and quality of research and knowledge extension projects of the Laboratory. In addition, inaccurate reporting, lack of grant facilitation, and failure in communications could result in lost funding and jeopardized relationships with collaborators and communities.Poor judgment or poor relationship management may harm the reputation of UBCO and may result in lost research partnership opportunities. Inaccurate or incomplete information regarding partnership opportunities or sponsor regulations could result in a loss of funding or may commit the University to unacceptable award conditions. Mismanagement of partnerships could result in the return of funds, loss of future funds and/or inability to collect funds owed to the University. Incorrect interpretation of Sponsoring Agency and University policy could result in non-compliance with sponsoring agency terms.Supervision Received
This position will work with the direction of the Principal Investigator (Mathieu Bourbonnais) and with oversight and advice of the Manager, Innovation (Sandra Spencer). This position is expected to be able to independently perform duties and consult regularly with the PI and the Manager, Innovation.Supervision Given
This position will provide oversight over research and knowledge extension activities of the Laboratory, and help support research assistants and/or trainees.Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.– Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own– Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred Qualifications

  • A graduate degree, preferably PhD, in a relevant discipline;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills including peer-reviewed publications, presentations at national/international conferences, grant applications, proceedings, reports, etc.;
  • Ability to manage and mentor research trainees;
  • Project management experience; ability to manage projects, especially those involving multiple phases and/or teams;
  • Ability to exercise initiatives and innovative thinking;
  • Computer and data analysis skills (e.g., Word processing, Excel, citation/reference management software, programming skills in R or Python are an asset)
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and pay attention to details;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team;
  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills.

Expected salary

$5209.17 – 7485.33 per month
