Mission and objectives

The UN Secretary-General’s bold new global reform agenda launched on 1 January 2019, in response to General Assembly resolution 71/243, repositions the UN Development System to deliver on the 2030 Agenda for dignity, prosperity, and peace on a healthy planet. Central to this process, and as further mandated by General Assembly resolution 72/279, a new generation of UN Resident Coordinator Offices across the world are being strengthened under the leadership of an empowered UN Resident Coordinator, the highest-ranking representative of the UN Development System at country level.

Context

The Resident Coordinator’s Office is the United Nations’ entity tasked to coordinate the UN System’s work at the country level. It supports UN agencies, programmes, and funds interventions in the country, including partnerships. In Saudi Arabia, the UN System is represented by 23 agencies, funds, and specialized programmes. The country team (UNCT) is made up of representatives of these entities. The UN Resident Coordinator (RC) guides and supports the work of the UNCT, ensuring effective coordination and cooperation across the mandates of each organisation. The Office of the Resident Coordinator (RCO) strengthens the joint activities of the UN System in Saudi Arabia. Its purpose is to maximize, in a coordinated manner, the UN’s work so that the system can provide a collective, coherent, and integrated response to national priorities and needs under the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals and other international commitments.

This UNV assignment is part of the RCO team efforts to ensure strong communication and liaison between with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the RCO/UNCT particularly during COP16

Task description

Under the supervision of the RC, the National UN Youth Volunteer will:

Liaison with MOFA
• Support liaison between the UN RC Office and the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, embassies, and other diplomatic missions.
• Follow up on communication with Saudi MOFA regarding diplomatic matters, visits, and events.
Event Management:
• Support planning and coordination of UN events, ceremonies, and high-level meetings.
• Support the organization of conferences, seminars, and workshops in collaboration with relevant UN Agencies, Funds, and
Programmes.
• Ensure proper protocol and diplomatic courtesies are observed at all times.
• Support logistical arrangements, including transportation, accommodation, and security for visiting dignitaries and UN officials.
• Coordinate with UNDSS to ensure the safety and security of UN events and personnel.
• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events
that mark International Volunteer Day);
• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
• Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
