The Department of Physiology, University of Toronto (St. George campus) is recruiting a Sessional Coordinator and Lecturer for PSL1040 (Systems Biology in Physiology) during the 2024-25 Winter Session. The course will run from January 6 to April 30, 2025, inclusive of the term test.Course number and title: PSL1040 – Systems Biology in PhysiologyCourse Description: Systems biology is a recent area of science that links general medical scientific research approaches with ‘large scale’ analyses. The overall goal of systems biology science is to connect complex biological networks with biochemical and physiological outcomes. Systems biology platforms include many of the ‘omic’ disciplines such as: genomics, epigenetics, transcriptomics, network signaling, metabolomics, interactomics, lipidomics and proteomics.The course will begin with a set of general lecture overviews of the approaches available, basic theory, and application. The remaining lectures will be student-driven, seminar-based discussions with Faculty members as facilitators of this discussion. We will cover the major systems biology literature and technical approaches. The general course detail will be relatively narrow given the topics covered, however the written essay will provide the student sufficient opportunity to explore one area in greater detail.Sessional dates of appointment: January to April 2025Estimated course enrolment: 15Estimated TA support: 0Class schedule: During the scheduled Arts and Science winter term, with classes Mondays 2-4 p.m. (online delivery).Duties: Duties will include supervising the guest faculty who lead various lecture sessions; organizing and administering research paper assignments; providing several lectures during the session; evaluating students during group participation; processing assignment and grading; dealing with student administration inquiries and medical notes.
