Quantum System Scientist

Job title:

Quantum System Scientist

Company

Oxford Ionics

Job description

We are pioneering advancements in quantum computing by utilising trapped ion technology and our proprietary laser-free quantum control methods. Our research and development efforts build on our fully integrated quantum processors that can be fabricated within standard silicon foundries. This unique approach allows us to leverage the highest-performing qubit technology while ensuring scalability and manufacturability using existing semiconductor fabrication technology. We approach quantum computing with a focus on minimising errors, striving to achieve ultra-low gate errors at scale. Our immediate objective is to develop functional quantum computers within the NISQ regime, aiming to construct fault-tolerant machines that require minimal QEC overhead. Our recent breakthroughs include achieving 99.97% fidelity in two-qubit gates and 99.9992% fidelity in single-qubit operations without error correction, setting new industry standards for performance. What To ExpectThe Quantum Infrastructure team is responsible for designing, building, commissioning, and operating the quantum systems that power our ion trap quantum processors. The team specialises in designing and operating narrow linewidth lasers across the visible and NIR spectrum (in free space and in fibre), associated modulators, optical cavities, and beam conditioning systems. The team’s scope encompasses cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum, superconducting magnets, and optical imaging systems. What You’ll Be Responsible ForYou will be responsible for designing new optical systems such as AOM switchboards, ion imaging systems, and laser stabilisation systems and supporting and training the technician team in assembling, commissioning, and maintaining our quantum computers. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the assembly and commissioning of these systems and specifying and designing new quantum systems to meet broader science and technical objectives. You will work across the organisation to deliver the quantum systems, working with technicians to assemble, test, and bring these units online, trap the first ions in new systems, and improve the reliability of our current systems.Other key responsibilities include debugging problems on existing systems and specifying optical setups to meet scientific requirements. Additional tasks concern commissioning new systems, such as performing trap beam alignment and electrical engineering tasks such as in-situ PCB testing and configuring and debugging control system problems.RequirementsYou will need a PhD in an experimental AMO field. You should have expertise in laser optics, including free-space optics, optical fibre coupling and system design, and modulation technologies (AOM + EOM). Experience in designing, constructing, operating, and debugging experimental AMO systems, particularly atom or ion trapping experiments, is highly valued. You should also possess excellent communication skills, a can-do attitude, and the ability to train technical teams. We would love to hear from you if you have operated similar systems and thrive on technical challenges.BenefitsOxford Ionics is leading the way in quantum technology, and we need skilled, innovative individuals like you. We offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career with a world-class team, business stock options, uncapped annual leave, flexible working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more. Join us and be part of the future of quantum computing.Oxford Ionics is committed to equal opportunity for all.
