An inclusive, digital-first culture that invests in you, gives you a platform for continuous learning, and access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities to grow your career.The Reactor Mounting Structure (RMS) team is responsible for the design and technical justification of the mounting structure and primary shielding that form part of the naval reactor plant for Dreadnought and SSNA. Working on this equipment requires cross-functional collaboration including working with the materials, shielding, electrical, CAD and structural analysis Subject Matter Experts as well as the shipbuilder and submarine maintainer. The role is ideally suited to a mechanical engineer with a good understanding of structural principles and able to work closely and effectively with industry partners.We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.What you will be doing:You will be responsible for reviewing the detailed design of components, responding to shipbuilder queries, evaluating proposed changes, supporting component construction and supporting updates to the component justification where required. Additionally you will be responsible for the design development of structures for future submarine classes.

  • Interfacing with the customer and external companies to support shipbuilder integration activities.
  • Supporting the manufacturing of major components, the resolution of manufacturing queries and defining, planning and reporting development.
  • Supporting development of the detailed design definitions.
  • Working cross-functionally to understanding the impact of changes.
  • Writing justifications to support the life of components in service.
  • Supporting development of concept designs for future submarine classes and the transition into build at the Shipyard.

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s or PhD in Engineering or regional equivalent qualification or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
  • A background in practical mechanical engineering and kowledge of manufacturing processes, ideally of heavy manufacturing and fabrication.
  • Experience of interpreting structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA) assessments.
  • Able to interpret complex engineering drawings.
  • Experience of using ASME or other relevant design codes.
  • Ideally with experience in a relevant industry, such as heavily regulated operations, or products and services where high levels of reliability and integrity are required.
  • Ideally a Chartered Engineer or be able to demonstrate sufficient experience to become chartered.
  • Rapid problem diagnosis and development of solutions – being able to apply practical solutions to technical problems.
  • An ability to work in an environment with a flexible and challenging demands and deadlines.
