The Opportunity

The School of Life Sciences is seeking to appoint a Professor or Reader to lead an internationally competitive research programme on infectious disease. Alongside their research the successful candidate will take a leadership role in promoting the expansion of the infectious diseases research theme within the School. They will also provide a role model that promotes a positive research culture.

The School of Life Sciences is currently expanding its strength in the field of infectious disease. It has recently built and certified a dedicated bio-containment laboratory suite (ACDP HG3 / SAPO3) enabling research to be carried out into pathogens requiring high containment. The high containment laboratory complements the existing research facilities within the School which include an insectary thereby enabling research into vector-borne diseases such as malaria, leishmaniasis, bluetongue and dengue. The School of Life Sciences has strong links across the University, especially with the Keele School of Medicine and the Harper-Keele Veterinary School, to facilitate interdisciplinary research.

We are looking for a Reader or Professor level scientist with a track record of leading a research programme into veterinary or human infectious disease. The track record of the successful candidate will be judged on a range of research outcomes including publications, obtaining competitive funding, generating collaborations and partnerships, promoting the careers of junior scientists, professional awards, engagement and outreach activities etc. We are looking for a research vision which complements the current strengths of the school, and has the potential for interdisciplinary research opportunities within the school. We are also looking for a colleague who will promote the supportive, inclusive, and collaborative research culture within the school.

In addition to their research role the successful candidate will contribute to teaching within the School, primarily on our new Microbiology and Immunology course. In order to achieve this you will be able to incorporate your knowledge and experience of infectious diseases into exciting learning experiences for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
