The postholder will support the Head of the Pharmacy Teaching Department and the Dean of Bioscience Education in ensuring the faculty executes excellence across all its activities.This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent.Key responsibilitiesThe role holder is expected:

  • To provide leadership and strategic oversight for Clinical Pharmacy teaching across the MPharm and Independent Prescribing post-graduate course, overseeing the professional development of teaching staff within the Medicines Use Team of the Pharmacy Department.
  • To oversee the educational research strategy for Clinical Pharmacy, disseminating good practice within and outside the university.
  • To foster strong links within a complex environment, in particular working across different stakeholder groups, primary, secondary care, and the trusts
  • To develop strategic links with NHSE in relation to the commissioning of education, especially regarding the placements model
  • Work with King’s Health partners Pharmaceutical Science Clinical Academic Group (PSCAG) staff and pharmacy staff, to deliver and support clinical teaching and medicines use research.
  • To manage the academic contribution to the Clinical Teaching education portfolio
  • To champion and lead initiatives to improve the student experience
  • To foster a stimulating, innovative and inclusive cultural environment across the Department enabling students and staff to thrive and develop.

The Head of the Clinical Teaching will work closely with the head of the Pharmacy Department and Deans of Education, other Heads of Teaching Department, Heads of School, the Faculty’s Education Support Services team and other staff across the Faculty to ensure that the activities of the Teaching Department are delivered in an efficient and appropriate manner.The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.Skills, knowledge, and experienceLeadership

  • Provide academic vision and leadership in Clinical Pharmacy Teaching, PSCAG, Faculty, university and beyond.
  • Instigate a culture which enables staff to develop their leadership skills, identifying appropriate opportunities for accruing experience in leadership, to ensure that staff are suitably prepared to take on more senior leadership roles in the future as part of succession planning.
  • Lead and/or participate in Faculty discussions around partnerships – locally, nationally, and internationally – facilitating interactions and establishing expectations.

Governance

  • Ensure compliance with university regulations, statutes and codes of practice for all teaching classes and-practical sessions as part of the Teaching Department’s programme and projects.
  • Responsible for ensuring risk assessments are completed for all teaching.
  • Responsible for preparation, conduct and follow up action associated with accreditation of programmes, acting as the university contact for professional, statutory, and regulatory bodies.
  • Responsible for the budget for clinical pharmacy teaching and the budget for experiential learning.

Staff management

  • Collaborating with the Heads of Department, and considering the clinical duties of staff where applicable, the role holder will:
  • Participate in the recruitment, management and welfare of academic and other staff who contribute to the education programmes.
  • Assist in maintaining an equitable balance of research, teaching, and administrative responsibilities amongst staff in the Teaching Department
  • Provide input into the probationary, appraisal, disciplinary and career development procedures for staff in the Teaching Department
  • Identify future staffing needs and engage with the Dean of Bioscience Education to input to discussion within the faculty around workforce planning requirements
  • Have an input to setting the standards and job requirements of Clinical Teaching, and liaise with the line manager of these staff in advance of annual performance reviews
  • Encourage staff to strengthen the Department by being collegial, joining professional networks and working groups and filling School/Faculty roles, recognising, and celebrating these contributions.
  • Embed a culture of diversity and inclusivity across the Pharmacy Department, actively addressing areas of potential bias in relation to the Department’s staff and student community and maintaining the School’s policies on diversity and inclusion
  • Is able to appreciate the contribution of social and behavioural sciences to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching curriculum in Pharmacy, as well as to practice-based research in medicines use.
  • Oversee staff and student welfare in the Pharmacy Teaching Department

Education

  • Contribute to the management and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses/programmes and the develop of new initiatives, working closely with the Faculty Education Manager, Education Support Services, Head of Department and School Leads (Education)
  • Contribute to curriculum development for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, driving improvement and innovation in education in the Faculty and embedding this in the culture of the Pharmacy Teaching Department, working closely with Head of Department and School Leads (Education)
  • Contribute to a wide range of functions relating to undergraduate and postgraduate taught including admissions, examination, welfare, progression monitoring and achievement rates
  • Contribute to audit and other quality assurance activities

Research

  • Lead a programme of research of relevance to pharmacy practice/clinical pharmacy supported by a team of researchers and PhD students
  • Author research publications that are internationally leading

Resource Management & Planning

  • Contribute to decisions regarding the facilities required to deliver the Pharmacy Teaching Department’s work, including equipment and space.

Other duties

  • To carry out other duties as may reasonably be required by the Head of Department, Dean of Bioscience Education or Head of School.

  • Can provide academic leadership in clinical pharmacy.
  • Can play a key role in setting and delivering the faculty’s contribution to the university’s education strategy.
  • Is committed to promoting and embedding equality, diversity, inclusion, and a progressive organizational culture.

Desirable criteria * Ability to resolve complex education, clinical and /or research related problems using initiative and creativity whilst ensuring compliance with appropriate regulations and policies.

  • Ability to think strategically and contribute to the School and Faculty’s development of initiatives of strategic importance to the university.
  • Ability to manage an administrative workload managing own time to achieve strict and often conflicting deadlines.
