Remote HVAC/Appliance Technician – Prudhoe Bay

Job Description

The Remote HVAC Appliance Technician installs, repairs, and maintains industrial and commercial HVAC equipment as well as electric air handling units, exhaust fans, make up air units, pneumatic as well as line, and low voltage controls, various appliances and air compressors. All duties are to be performed in accordance with NMS’ mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities

  • Trouble shoots and repairs, as dictated by sound business practices, industrial HVAC equipment, pneumatic control systems, line and low voltage control systems, residential style fuel burning and electric furnaces, unit heaters, kitchen exhaust systems, various appliances, air compressors and other general service areas.
  • Repairs and maintains all the heating, air handling systems and A/C units.
  • Interprets preventative maintenance schedules and carries them through the steps needed for completion as noted on computer generated general maintenance/repair work orders.
  • Trouble shoots and repair large tonnage cooling equipment used in controlled environment such as labs or computer and control areas.
  • Diagnose and repair pneumatic systems related to building climate controls.
  • Lays out the installation of structural and functional components and installs them as required. Fastens parts together to assemble structural and functional components such as motors, controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, cores, and pipes.
  • Cuts, threads, and connects pipe to functional components and water or power system on premises.
  • Pumps specified gas or fluid into system. Starts system, observes operation, read gauges and instruments, and adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls, and pumps to control level of fluid, pressure, and temperature in system.
  • Dismantle malfunctioning systems and test components. Replaces or adjusts defective or worn parts to repair systems.
  • Tests and repairs various systems and equipment using meters, schematics, drawings and manuals.
  • Install wiring to connect components to electric power source.
  • Attends daily safety toolbox meetings and is required to do job safety evaluations for each job.
  • Notify supervisor if safety and sanitation standards are not being met.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Technician must have EPA Universal certification to work on refrigerant systems.
  • Five (5) years’ experience working in a commercial and/or industrial setting.
  • HVAC hands on repair and troubleshooting proficiency in the commercial and industrial settings is required.
  • Perform routine calibration and troubleshooting of pneumatic and electrical line and low voltage thermostats and controllers, routine change of filters.
  • Trouble shoot and diagnosis of airflow problems, monitor glycol pressures and levels.
  • Periodic inspection and monitoring of air conditioning coils to ensure proper airflows and heat rejection.
  • Augmentation of filter changes as required, inspect coil conditions for organic debris and soils.
  • Ensure compliance with EPA.
  • Use the Annual Preventative Air Conditioning Maintenance checklists/job plan provided or by manufacturers specifications.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform maintenance on various types of heating systems is required.
  • Basic knowledge of low to high voltage, 3 phase wiring principles and how to read a schematic.
  • The ability to write detailed, descriptive reports on HVAC equipment and required repairs. CFC reports required by the client, etc.
  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS’ vehicle insurance policy.
  • Must pass all pre-employment contract requirements which may include but are not limited to: drug test, physical and fit for duty assessment and hearing test. Applicants not located near a testing facility are responsible for paying for travel to the nearest testing facility.
  • Able to work independently and prioritize workload.
  • Must be able to cooperate and work as part of a team with fellow employees, customers and clients.
  • Must be able to make decisions in the moment with little to no supervision.
  • Must be able to be on your feet for 12 hours per shift for the scheduled rotation.
  • Must be able to live in dormitory style settings and meet cleanliness requirements of the remote camp.
  • Contract requires employees to speak, understand, read and write English.
  • Must meet and adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set forth by the company and client. CANDIDATES RESIDING OUTSIDE ANCHORAGE AREA: Candidates residing in Alaska & the Lower 48 for any contract : For the purposes of pre-employment testing, Anchorage will be considered the point of hire (with the exception of drug testing, which will be conducted near the candidate’s place of residence). Employee is responsible for any travel expenses and needed accommodations related to pre−employment tasks that need to be completed in Anchorage, AK. This includes, but is not limited to, any safety training requirements, required pre−employment testing and/or training such as physical, DOT physical/medical card, fit for duty, audiogram, and/or other testing required by contract/company (NSTC, APICC training, security licensing requirements, etc.). Candidates residing in Alaska for Alyeska Contract: pre-employment testing will be scheduled near the candidate’s area of residence within the state. The only exception is when the candidate lives in a region without the necessary service providers to complete all requirements.
  • Flights to Remote Locations : All employees are responsible for all expenses related to reporting to point of hire (Anchorage, AK) for scheduled trips paid for by the company for remote locations. Noise level: Moderate to LoudDescription of environment: This is a remote camp setting.Employees must constantly be able to stand, walk, climb, push, pull use hands and arms, stoop, kneel and crouch. Employees are occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. Travel: Must be able to travel by plane and/or bus to remote camps.   • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to knuckle x2
  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist x 2
  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to shoulders x 2
  • Push: push horizontally with a peak force of 75 f-lbs. with two hands.
  • Stoop & Twist: Perform alternate cross over toe touches x 10 each side, self-paced but continuous.
  • Squat Test: Functionally squat x 5, self-paced but continuous.
  • Kneel: Kneel on one knee and stand. Return to kneel on opposite knee. Repeat alternate kneeling sequence x 10 for each knee, self-pace but continuous.
  • Stairs: Climb up and down 12 steps x 5 for a total of 60 steps;
  • Allow 30 second rest after climbing up and down each set of 30 steps.
  • Stairs & Carry: Climb up and down 12 steps x 2 for a total of 24 steps while carrying 40 lbs. in one hand and using the other hand to grasp a railing for safety, self-paced but continuous.
  • Allow a 30 second rest period after climbing up and down 12 steps while carrying.
  • Slanted Ladder: Climb a slanted ladder with 8 rungs x 8 repetitions for a total of 64 rungs;
  • Allow 30 second rests after each climb (up and down) of 16 rungs, self-paced.
  • Shovel: Perform a shovel test for three (3) minutes self-paced but continuous (i.e., no breaks) using a standard snow shovel with a 3 lb. weight attached to the shovel blade. (e.g. sand bag weight securely taped to the shovel blade.)
