The SIC Network includes sites across Canada integrating research within clinical care through an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach. The SIC Network is based at the University of Alberta, in the Department of Pediatrics under the leadership of Dr. Karina Top.The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta is one of Canada’s leading academic health centres for pediatric specialty and subspecialty education and research. The mission of the Department includes delivering excellence in care for infants, children, youth and families by providing comprehensive health care, advancing knowledge through innovative research, advocating for vulnerable populations, promoting quality and patient safety, and developing leaders in child health.PositionUnder the direction of Dr. Karina Top, Professor of Pediatrics, lead of the Special Immunization Clinic (SIC) Network and co-lead for the International Network of Special Immunization Services (INSIS), the Research Analyst is responsible for undertaking complex research activities specific to vaccine safety and vaccination of special populations including observational studies, systematic and narrative reviews. The position is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of various aspects of projects, including study design, data management, quality assurance, data extraction and analysis, report writing, and manuscript preparation. The Research Analyst is responsible for tracking several milestones and targets to ensure timely completion. The successful candidate requires a strong background in epidemiology research methods and quantitative statistical analyses, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team. Experience with systematic reviews and evidence synthesis is considered an asset.DutiesTECHNICAL ACTIVITIES (60%):

  • Assists Principal Investigators and Co-Investigators to develop and refine specific key research questions to be addressed by the project(s)
  • Assists with preparation of research protocol(s) in compliance with funding agency requirements
  • Works with the SIC Network Project Manager to ensure all procedures and processes are in compliance with the research protocol(s)
  • Oversees the design, development and maintenance of project database(s) to ensure data quality control
  • Works with the SIC Network Project Manager to design and develop project materials including study selection forms, forms for data extraction, quality assessment, and other related research tools
  • Conducts training of research staff in data entry and verification, develops standard procedures to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of data, and monitors data quality
  • Conducts analysis of project data and works closely with project and network leads (e.g., SIC Network Project Manager, SIC Network co-PIs, co-Is, trainees) to interpret findings and support knowledge dissemination activities

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION (25%):

  • Drafts manuscripts and reports; coordinates and integrates feedback from Principal Investigators and Co-Investigators.
  • Assists with responses and revisions based on feedback from co-Investigators, stakeholders and journal peer reviewers.
  • Prepares figures and tables for evidence reports, scientific papers, posters and presentations
  • Prepares drafts of conference presentations and posters, educational materials and other forms of knowledge transfer and exchange

OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT (5%):

  • Assists with tracking milestones and timelines throughout the life cycle of research project(s) and works with the SIC Network Project Manager to develop and implement necessary changes to ensure milestones are met

OTHER RESEARCH ACTIVITIES (10%):

  • Participates in SIC Network and project meetings to provide updates on the progress of project setup and analysis and discuss relevant methodological issues and project results
  • Assists with the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals as required
  • Other related duties as may be required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in health sciences; including epidemiology, public health science, biostatistics or related field.
  • 8 years of experience in the above fields, including at least 3 years experience with clinical research methodologies, quantitative statistical analysis
  • A combination of experience and education will be considered
  • Ability to embrace change, adapt to new information and work proactively and positively in an evolving organizational context
  • Ability to set priorities and manage changing/conflicting priorities and tight deadlines
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently and accountably in a positive manner
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work efficiently in a professional and ethical manner in accordance with University of Alberta policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), statistical software packages (e.g., SAS, R), and reference management programs (e.g., EndNote);

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s Degree in health sciences; including epidemiology, public health science, biostatistics, or a related field is preferred
  • Experience working in a health research environment related to epidemiology, statistics, public health, or related field is preferred
