We have a generous holiday package; plus the opportunity to buy more, great pension schemes and a number of health and wellbeing initiatives to support you.Closing Date: 23 June 2024The RoleThis is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Research Associate or Research Assistant in Medical Statistics to join an interdisciplinary team focused on improving lives through world-class research in ageing, sarcopenia and multiple long-term conditions.You will be based in the AGE Research Group and will contribute your expertise in statistical analyses and data management to a range of interdisciplinary research studies within the Ageing, Sarcopenia and Multimorbidity theme of the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre. These studies involve both primary data collection (with requirement for rigorous data management) and secondary analyses of existing large UK and international datasets. You will work with Chief Investigators, researchers, statisticians, academics, clinicians, database providers and others as appropriate and will benefit from strong existing collaborative links between the AGE and Biostatistics Research Groups.This full-time post is fixed term for a period of 1 year in the first instance with the potential to be extended.For informal enquiries please contact Professor Rachel Cooper:Find out more:AGE Research Group:

  • Although working under the general guidance of Principal Investigators, the postholder will contribute ideas, including enhancements to the technical or methodological aspects of studies, thus providing substantial ‘added value’
  • Determine appropriate methodologies for the research, with advice and support where required
  • Discuss research questions, including those with a clinical focus, with other research group members and to formulate suitable analysis plans
  • Carry out analyses using a range of statistical software and to produce clearly formatted reports for other research group members
  • Provide advice and support to other research group members who are carrying out their own statistical analyses
  • Liaise with research group members and their collaborators and prepare data sets for their planned analyses
  • Contribute relevant sections of research papers (typically the methods and results) including text, figures and tables of a standard suitable for publication, with the potential to lead on the writing up of papers, where appropriate
  • Provide input to funding applications for new studies, such as sample size calculations
  • Work in accordance with the research group’s data management protocols and contribute to their continuing development
  • Create suitable documentation and metadata in support of the research group’s data resources
  • Work with support staff and, on occasions, with undergraduate and taught postgraduate students, and interact intellectually with other academic members of the Institute
  • May contribute to events celebrating the public engagement of science
  • Develop an awareness of University structures, policies and procedures and relevant issues in the higher education, research, social and political environment
  • Provide guidance and advice in analysis techniques and good practice to staff and students

The PersonKnowledge, Skills and Experience

  • High level of analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Able to analyse and interpret complex data and communicate the results effectively to others
  • Experience of using key statistical packages (e.g. Stata, SPSS, MLwin, R) to run a range of different types of statistical analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of research with clear transferable skills and some experience or awareness of the academic research environment
  • Able to prioritise and manage workload using own initiative as required

Desirable

  • Experience of data management
  • Knowledge of data governance regulations
  • Experience in the preparation of proposals for research funding
  • Experience of contributing to academic publications and presentations
  • Willing to keep abreast of relevant methodological developments

Qualifications

  • First degree (1st or 2:1) in a relevant numerical subject
  • MSc in Medical Statistics or a closely related subject (Research Assistant level) or a PhD in Statistics or Epidemiology (Research Associate level)
