You will join the Electrical Power group in the , Newcastle University. You will have opportunity to collaborate with different regional and national policymakers and stakeholders, including National Grid ESO, Siemens, Northern Powergrid, ScottishPower, UK Power Networks, Newcastle City Council, and Association for Decentralised Energy.Your role will involve data-driven modelling, analysis, and optimisation of net-zero buildings and energy systems, including electricity and heat sectors at household, communal/regional, and national levels. You will particularly focus on unlocking the flexibility of low-carbon technologies in integrated energy systems and examining how new business models affect the operations of these systems.You will have the opportunity to liaise with international experts across various disciplines related to net-zero buildings and energy systems, including , , , and at Newcastle University.   • Modelling, analysing, and optimising net-zero buildings and energy systems
  • Publishing and presenting research in high-quality journals
  • Interacting with academic/industrial partners and policymakers/stakeholders, including network operators, city councils, and energy system companies
  • Undertake, lead, and disseminate research as part of a team
  • Quantifying and understanding flexibility in net-zero buildings and energy systems
  • Developing innovative tools and models for designing, controlling, and operating net-zero buildings and energy systems
  • Disseminating research outcomes through high-impact journal papers, high-quality conference presentations, and engaging industry seminars
  • Working closely with policymakers and stakeholders to achieve impact by translating research outputs into business practices
  • Keeping track of deadlines and deliverables and being responsible for reporting
  • Attending project meetings and presenting the group’s work

The Person (Essential)Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Strong skills in using optimisation tools and models in Python, Julia, or GAMS
  • Strong skills with control methodologies, their applications in net-zero. buildings and energy systems (e.g. energy storage and demand response)
  • Project management skills to ensure project milestones are met on time
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at all levels, along with good team working skill
  • Knowledge of data-driven optimisation methods suitable for the analysis of net-zero buildings and energy systems
  • Ability to understand techno-economic analyses and perform relevant studies
  • Significant experience in modelling and simulating net-zero buildings and energy systems
  • Track record in journal publications, or evidence of the potential to achieve this target
  • Experience of working with industry in the field of net-zero buildings and energy systems

Desirable

  • Ability to carry out uncertainty-aware modelling of net-zero buildings and energy systems
  • Skilled in developing Python-based open-source tools that can be used to translate research outputs into industrial practice
  • The ability to effectively handle large data sets associated with net-zero buildings and energy systems
  • Ability to present information effectively, writing technical reports and presenting at meetings and conferences; particularly the ability to communicate complex ideas in simple language
  • Experience in power/energy systems regulatory frameworks and operations
  • Experience in energy markets and relevant operations

Qualifications

  • PhD (Associate level) in area of research within power and energy systems
  • Degree (Assistant level) in Engineering or related discipline with a focus on power/energy systems
