The Institute is committed to a multi- disciplinary research portfolio that furthers an understanding of the eye and visual system linked with clinical investigations targeted to specific problems in the prevention and treatment of eye disease.Applications are invited for a Research Assistant / Research Fellow to join the Visual Plasticity Lab to conduct original research in visual cortical plasticity in mice.The post offers an exciting opportunity for someone to play a key role in studying vision neuroscience at a highly successful and dynamic research and teaching institute as well as benefitting from the opportunities afforded by being part of the larger community of the Faculty of Brain Sciences. School of Life and Medical Sciences and UCL.About the roleSalary: Appointment at G6b will be on spine points 25-28 (£38,357 – £41,005 per annum inclusive of London Allowance). Appointment at Grade 7 will be on spine point 30 (£43,124 per annum inclusive of London Allowance)Duration: This post is funded until 31 January 2026, in the first instance.The post holder will support ongoing investigations into the neurophysiological basis of visual impairment and recovery following optic nerve damage.The role will focus on conducting experiments to understand neural and circuit-level changes in the retina and brain, correlating these with behavioural outcomes. Key responsibilities include managing experiments using advanced neuroimaging techniques, maintaining mouse models, and assisting in the development and optimization of experimental protocols. The post holder will contribute creatively to the refinement of methods and techniques used in the lab and ensure high-quality data collection and analysis.Appointment as a Research Fellow at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD. If this is not the case, an initial appointment will be made as a Research Assistant at Grade 6b with payment at Grade 7 backdated upon award of a PhD to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis (with corrections).About youThe successful candidate will have a BSc and MSc or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline. A PhD in a relevant discipline is essential for appointment as a Research Fellow.Laboratory experience, the ability to learn new procedures and techniques and perform them precisely are essential as is resourcefulness and the ability to act on own initiative.
