Job DescriptionOur group examines the offline processing of human memory. We integrate a variety of cutting-edge techniques including behavioural analysis, functional imaging, and brain stimulation. Together, these are used to provide a picture of the unique and privileged processing that occurs to memories offline following their formation (including the interaction across memory systems, and generalization).Currently, there is an opening in our group funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR: USA). It would suit bright, creative, enthusiastic, aspiring researchers willing to think carefully, creatively, and collaboratively (with the Principal Investigator) about their work in this project on human neuroscience. The position for at least one year with funding available for extension to three years. Any costs associated with working in the UK will be met by the University. Specific details of background, experience and skills can be found below.Applicants should have (or expect to receive soon) a PhD in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, mathematics, computer science or another relevant discipline, with a strong analytical background. Ideally, applicants will have direct experience using a programming language (MATLAB/Python/R) as a tool for the conduct and analysis of experiments. Experience with either human neuroimaging (including EEG or MEG) or particularly brain stimulation techniques would be an advantage. Any applicant will have enthusiasm, and a clear, demonstrable capacity for acquiring expertise in these techniques.The group provides a superb training environment. With many using it as a foundation to secure independent fellowships, and faculty positions. The laboratory is housed within the Institute of Neuroscience & Psychology (INP), which is home to several Wellcome Trust Investigators, and national academy members (Royal Society, Edinburgh).Main Duties and Responsibilities1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of the research project.2. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.3. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/ School/ Research Group, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.4. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project & subject area, & develop/implement a suitable research strategy.5. Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.6. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.7. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the research group/School/College/University and wider community (e.g. Academic and Industrial Partners).8. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.9. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.10. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline of cognitive science, neuroscience, and psychology.11. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.12. Perform the above duties with a high degree of independence, leadership and responsibility, particularly in relation to planning, funding, collaborating and publishing research, and mentoring colleagues.These key tasks are not intended to be exhaustive but simply highlight a few major tasks, which the staff member may reasonably be expected to perform.Qualifications,Knowledge, Skills and ExperienceKnowledge/QualificationsEssential:A1. Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) with at least 2 years’ post doctoral experience in a similar or related role(s), or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experienceA2. Theoretical and practical knowledge in a research related field.A3. A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the wider subject area or subject specialism.A4. Knowledge of specialist IT software (e.g. MATLAB, Python and/or R).A5. Extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of research-related field.Desirable:B1. Excellent understanding of time series, and statistical analysis.B2. Theoretical understanding of brain stimulation techniques.B3. Knowledge of neuroimaging techniques particularly EEG/MEG.SkillsEssential:C1. Excellent technical skills for the conduct and subsequent analysis of human experimental work.C2. Prior experience using at least one of the following tools: Neuroimaging (MEG, fMRI), Electroencephalography (EEG) and brain stimulation (TMS, tDCS, tACS).C3. Research creativity and cross-discipline collaborative ability as appropriate.C4. Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approach.C5. Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including public presentations and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely.C6. Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skills.C7. Extensive IT and data analysis/interpretation skills as appropriate.C8. Self-motivation, initiative and independent thought/working.C9. Problem solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approach.Desirable:D1. Expertise in using concurrent TMS and EEG.ExperienceEssential:E1. Relevant research experience (including PhD training), in well-respected research laboratory.E2. Experience in the collection and analysis of data.E3. Experience of scientific writing.E4. Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.E5. Evidence of an emerging track record of publications in a relevant field.Desirable:F1. Some postdoctoral experience, including independence illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, the design/analysis of experiments, and the drafting of scientific publications.F2. Publications, including at least one as first author, in appropriate-impact international scientific journals.F3.
